Another opportunity to watch decent roller hockey - 15:19 17 Jan 08As the Southsea v. Middlesbrough game clashes with Saturday evening at Camberley, I suspect I won't be seeing any of you at Farnham. So I am offering you an alternative tournament to come and watch.
There is a National Divison 2 Roller Hockey tournament at Farnham Sports Center on Sunday 10th Feb. This lasts much of the day, so you can come along and watch any time from 9am to about 4pm. As an extra incentive, immediately after the tournament finishes, there is a roller disco. I know Drakey has been to this in the past, so ask him for details.
If you can make it, I recommend watching one of the games of the team my son Tom plays for, East Grinstead. Although this is division 2, the team has two of the best technical skaters/players in Britain. I think you will be amazed at the skate skill levels. And probably scared at how hard they hit the ball.

If you come to the Saturday evening session you should get a chance to "have a go". As I said, we have booked the rink for 2 hours but they don't take that long. I anticipate at least 30 minutes free skating time. I will bring along some sticks and balls. You can skate with stick and ball for a short while, then we could have a game if there are enough people.
The balls we use are very hard but I have a lighter plastic ball I use for beginners games.
I would recommend knee pads and shin pads if you have them - although not quite so important with the plastic ball.
Do you have any ideas what sort of numbers you are talking about? My son Tom and I will bring our skates.

Re:Another opportunity to watch decent roller hock - 09:28 18 Jan 08TBH probably only a few, say 3 or 4 of us. As you said the Saturday date clashes with the session at the Arena. I know at least Retry is an ex-hockey guy so expect he'd be pleased to join-in, I'm too scared so will probably watch only, unless I can be persuaded If Dogsbody comes he might be up for having a go - we do actually have some sticks in his storage that I don't think have been used in anger, but if we can use your equipment that would be good.
I'll ask around and get some definite numbers.

Dont bring sticks - they will be the wrong kind if they are street hockey.
You do not need to be scared - it is a non-contact sport - no body checing or barging. The stick and ball must stay below shouder height. And I wont expect you to go straight into a game without a few exercises to get used to the stick and ball.
It really is good fun - it only get serious when you start playing compeition.
I don't need to know how many are coming until a couple of days before.

Re:Another opportunity to watch decent roller hock - 21:54 20 Jan 08I'd be interested in coming along! This type of roller hockey is different to the one I know of. Interestingly, my home town is near to Middlesbrough, though I know nothing of the roller hockey team from there.

Good team Middlesbrough. Plenty of former and current England players. You''be right at home with the accent then. Southsea's goalie, if fit, is an ex-Middlesbrough player moved south

Re:Another opportunity to watch decent roller hock - 11:55 05 Feb 08If you fancy a drive to Farnham this coming Sunday to watch some fast, furious, high scoring roller hockey, this tournament is 8am - 2pm 10th feb. Combine a hour watching with a visit to Lidls or Sainsburys nearby for your weekly shop, plus a pub lunch. Then home in the afyternoon to snooze in front of the TV watching rugby.
