Le Mans not staying over Friday or Sunday nights - 14:16 17 Mar 08 Some people have expressed an interest in doing Le Mans but not staying over on the Friday and Saturday night. I thought I'd look into a few possiblities. Can someone with more experience of frerry loading/unloading/check in times and French travelling times let me know if I need to change any of these timings or if they are unrealistic, please?

By Ferry:

Sat 28th June
05:00 Leave Camberley
1.5 hr car Journey
06:30 Arrive at the Portsmouth Ferry terminal
07:00 Ferry to Caen
11:30 Arrive in Caen
2 hour car journey + 0.5 hr unloading time
14:00 Arrive Le Mans
16:00 Do the race

Sun 29th June
14:30 Leave the race early
2 hour car journey
16:30 Arrive Caen Ferry Terminal
17:15 Ferry to Portsmouth
22:15 Arrive Portsmouth
1.5 hour car journey and some unloading time
23:59 Arrive Camberley

Cost for this option based on 4 adults in the same car £202

Or it could go this way...

Eurotunnel

Sat 28th June

06:30 Leave Camberley
2 hour car journey
08:30 Check in at Folkstone
09:20 Eurotunnel to Calais
10:55 Arrive Calais
4 hour car journey + 0.5 hr unloading time
14:55 Arrive Le Mans
16:00 Race

Sunday 29th June
16:00 Finish Race
4 hour car journey to Calais + 1hr getting out of Le Mans
21:00 Check in at Calais
21:50 Eurotunnel to Folkstone
21:25 Arrive Folkstone (arrive before we leave!)
2 hour car journey + 0.5 hour unloading time
23:55 Arrive back in Camberley

This works out at a bargain £54 based on 4 ppl in my car.

Both of these travel suggestions do not take into account time to eat, sleep, set up tents for Saturday night etc. It also does not take into account how tired we may be after doing the race and all the driving but it depends if people want to make it there and back on the weekend.

I started to look at flying but that was getting compicated and the other option is Eurostar but that involved investigating public transport once we're in France which sounds like a challenge that I don't have time for right now. I've probably forgotten loads of vital information and timings but as a first run these seem to be the best way of getting there for those not wanting to stay over.

Let me know what ppl think and does anyone know what it costs to charter a plane...?!?

Sunday 29th June

Drive leisurely to Calais as there are no Eurotunnel trains running in the afternoon
Why do you say there are no Eurotunnel trains in the afternoon Dan?
I have just looked up and there appears to be one every two hours. Am I missing something? In fact I cannot see any between midnight and 6:00 on Monday morning!

By the way, I think you can get £20.00 travel for £5.00 Tesco vouchers on Eurotunnel. (As many vouchers as you want to use)

Re:Le Mans not staying over Friday or Sunday night - 15:51 17 Mar 08 How strange!

The site I went to (was directferries.co.uk but they seemed to have a direct link to Eurotunnel) didn't have any return time options for the Sunday so I picked the first available on the Monday - hence the early start.

Have visited the Eurotunnel site again and will edit in revised cost and timings

Thanks for pointing that out, MCS!

Here is the link for the Tesco clubcard vouchers. Every £2.50 in vouchers gives you £10.00 off the fare.

Re:Le Mans not staying over Friday or Sunday night - 00:34 18 Mar 08 My view, if your asking!!??

- You are gonna be shattered!!! That doesn't look like the fun event that Le Mans is supposed to be.

- I could be wrong but your costs seem to be very strange! I'm not sure if they are per person or not though!? Last year we could get a ferry for £200 for a return for four people (£50 each). Remember that Red has a discount card for Brittany Ferries which gets us good rates.

- Are you including petrol in this!? You also need to add at least an hours driving to each of your car trips, especially if going via Calais (Red can confirm this I believe), Calais is a gutsy drive, let alone if your tired.

- Don't discount Eurostar, if I had to do this it would be what I would pick and a few Londerners do it each year. Apparently it's a really easy swap over to the TGV (fast train) in Paris and the TGV takes you all the way down to Le Mans. I'm sure one of us can pick you up from the station. You can check details at Rail Europe although they aren't selling tickets that far in advance yet.

Sorry to sound negative, I hope it helps.
