The first time... - 12:14 06 May 08
...in a very long time, going outside with inlines.
I managed to get outside with inline skates this weekend. This may not mean much to most of you, but it is a very big deal to me. I had some fairly major knee surgery back in November, and tentative attempts with inlines over the winter were not too promissing. However, having bought an exercise bike and used it over the winter, the muscles around my knee are strong enough to be able to handle skating with inlines again.
So I should be okay to do the half marathon at Goodwood. Lots of skating to do between now and then, but I am feeling very positive. I could probably have gone back onto inlines a bit earler than I did, but I was genuinely frightened that my knees woud not hold up, and that would be an end to skating outdoors.
This also bodes well for next year, when I am thinking about doing the full marathon again after several years break. This will coincide with the rapid approach of my 60th birthday, which I can use as an excuse to screw lots of sponsorship money out of my works colleagues
And if you are interested in the gory details of the knee op, Google "Microfracture Knee Surgery". And to think asked why they didn't give me a local anaesthetic.
