Skate Business Ideas - 14:13 11 Feb 10 As some of you know, I've just been made redundant from work! Bit of a bummer but these things happen. It does however give me a fantastic opportunity to change tact and have a serious look at some of the skating business ideas that have been task around for the last couple of years.

I'd be interested to see what others think about these ideas, please be honest and let me know what you think would be the problems associated with them.

Skate shop - I really don't think this idea is a goer but I'll list it anyway to see what you think. I think physical shops are very hard to make profitable, especially against the Internet and Internet shops have a lot of competition as it doesn't matter where they are physically based. Skate shops too come with a bit more risk as you not only have to prebuy lots of types of skate but keep stock of every type in every size.

Skate Park - Would probably end up as more of an aggressive skate park but I think there is a definite need/want for one in our area. Probably easy enough to get council backing and support, question may be more of if I want to work with lots of young kids!

Roller Rink - I think there could be a real demand for this. Initial outlay could be high but people are currently commuting from the south coast up to Derby for a good skate so there is attraction. I know the London crowd would love a proper rink although not sure we could get it close enough to London for them. Options could vary from freeskate sessions like the arena/winter sessions to roller disco's to roller hockey and even roller derby or speed training!

So what do you think? Good ideas? Bad ideas? Any other ideas I could do?

Just like Dragons Den, pitch your ideas!

Re:Skate Business Ideas - 10:33 12 Feb 10 Housemate and me were chatting about the rink suggestion last night! Think it is a good one and if it was near enough to one of the main line stations for London it might make it easier to attract the london crowd. There would be a big outlay though to start with, but there would be a lot of options moving forward with it, more than if there was a skate park. Would also have overheads etc that you would need to cover as well

Not sure about the skate shop idea. There was one in Sandhurst/College town a while ago, but am not sure what happended to it...

Re:Skate Business Ideas - 15:57 12 Feb 10 Firstly, Dan this is news!! Hope your circumstances are ok.

I would love to see you set up a skate business tho

I reckon for all of the above ideas you'd need to base it in a fairly large town or city and the best place I could imagine nearby somewhere like Reading, possibly Guildford but its a bit smaller.

My head is filling with a lot of ideas on this, I'll be back to elaborate on them!

I like Camberley a lot but you are right that this needs to be looked at. My hunch is that it's better to have good transport connections than actually be in the area where the people are.

Re:Skate Business Ideas - 18:09 01 Mar 10 Funny you should mention this as I am constantly on at Adam about wanting to set up a roller rink somewhere like Reading and go into business after having taught for a few years!!! Just wouldn't no where to start not having done any business courses before, how to get funding etc.

Re:Skate Business Ideas - 18:55 01 Mar 10 Yeah, I think there is definitely a market!

I would however say that of the three companies that I am currently looking at setting up (not the same three above) the roller rink is looking to be the riskiest.

The other two ideas can grow slowly without too much risk however a roller rink isn't going to return a single penny until you have ticked every box and paid out for a location, insurance, Health / Safety and renovation.

I'm still investigating though

Re:Skate Business Ideas - 07:53 02 Mar 10 Without knowing what your other ideas are, I think the roller- rink idea lends itself quite nicely to different uses. It doesn't have to be just a roller-rink - you could have badminton / 5-a-side / basketball lines etc painted on, although then it's just a sports' hall. This maximises income 'cos you've got a much wider range of people interested in using it.

I still think it's a no-go as far as a business goes though.
