Good skating exercises? - 23:40 01 Mar 10 So I'm currently living in north east Ohio where its cold, and I guess watching the speed skaters on the winter olympics has made we want to dust off my inlines (which I brought with me to youngstown and used 4-5 times before it turned wintery). anyway, long story short there aren't any indoor skate groups around here and I'm not gonna get much time skating before its too warm to skate comfortably or do anything without air conditioning (I will never complain about English weather again)

So my question is this: does anyone have a list of good exercises I could do so my legs aren't gonna hurt quite as much when I start, because by the time the weather is nice enough to skate and I've done enough short skates here and there to get my stamina and leg muscles back to where they were it will be too late to skate anywhere fun!

thanks for reading

Tom

P.S if you dont want to read all that the summary is: "know any good exercises for skating so I suck less when summer rolls around?"

Re:Good skating exercises? - 23:52 01 Mar 10 I was actually thinking the same thing (although it has just gotten sunny here).

I have just remembered Lemmings awesome Exercise write up in the FAQ. How's that for starters?
In Vauxhall for the roller disco. Impressive setup. Now it's time to get my groove on - Twitter Status

Re:Good skating exercises? - 07:58 02 Mar 10 haha. I don't think they're awesome, but they'd do.

Tom, just have a look around on the net - you'll find loads of stuff. If you can find a gym, then the main areas that you'd want to work would be core and legs (I guess legs is obvious).

That's not to say you should ignore your upper body though - arm strength is important for arm swing over any kind of distance.

The document Dan's linked to should give you enough to keep going, but the other sort of things to look for are exercises which imitate the motion of skating but without skates on. I suspect if you google for skate plyometrics you'll find some cool videos, but start SLOWLY - it might not feel like hard work at the start, but I guarantee a minute of plyo and you'll be wondering how on earth to stand up again (at first).
