Speedskating for dummies... - 03:00 08 Jun 10 so I posted a while back that I was planning on doing some exercises for my legs so I'd be in good shape to take skating up again in the summer. (the local area has no winter skating sessions. In fact I tried to skate up and down a multi story car park during winter, as it was the only place without snow and cop cars came after me. Fortunately having an English accent got me out of that one)

So, summer is here and I found a perfectly smooth 30+ mile path through really beautiful country side. I've been out pacing a number of friends on bikes up and down it (thank you Lemmings exercises page).

ANYWAY, several miles later my skates (which were not quite the cheapest decathlon would sell me) threaten to fall apart, they took a beating when I moved to the US (damn baggage handlers). And this being a country where everything seems to be cheaper than in the good old UK I'm thinking about buying a set of speed skates. I've owned a set before that had more boot than a speed skate and really long frames and had great fun with them. They are unfortunately on the wrong continent for me to use them now, ran out of luggage space and could not pack them .

So just to summarize because I've been rambling on a bit here, is it fine to just transition to speed skates? is there a good entry level set? and does anyone know of any skating shops in Pittsburgh or Cleveland?(that last one is a long shot)

Re:Speedskating for dummies... - 12:58 08 Jun 10 Dunno about local shops I'm afraid but I have bought from both Inline Warehouse and Skates.com which have both been good to deal with. In Vauxhall for the roller disco. Impressive setup. Now it's time to get my groove on - Twitter Status

Re:Speedskating for dummies... - 06:56 09 Jun 10 is it fine to just transition to speed skates?
Yes, but you'll take some getting used to the lack of cuff and the change in wheel height (depending what size wheels you go for). Expect a sore back for a while 'cos the extra strain is noticeable until you get up to speed. Do not expect to put them on and be just as good as you were in rec skates.

Best bet is to have a look (possibly on line) to get an idea of prices and decide what you can afford. Most allow you to bung them in the oven to get a better fit (mould them), but you should definitely try some on before you buy to get an idea of length. I believe that Rollerblade do some cheaper ones that should allow moulding. My first set were Belotti Gammas (silver) and for the whole package were about 400 quid.

Thanks, I'm just wondering as well if things like these are any good?

http://www.planetonwheels.com/store/Bont-Semi-Race-Racing-Inline-Skates.html

described as for beginners and appear to have a larger boot, I've seen a couple of similar designs from a few companies, K2 makes a pair with an even larger boot, or do you think it's best to jump in at the deep end and get a more "proper" pair

Re:Speedskating for dummies... - 07:07 10 Jun 10 I'm not sure I really want to recommend a particular style - it's all down to how much you want to spend and what you want to achieve. I would say that 'proper' speed skating techinique (not that I'm saying I have this) is easier without a cuff (in my opinion). My transition was along the lines of:

FSKs (Crossmax 2, I think - the red ones)
Salomon Pilot Pro V (Yellow - 5 * 84mm) - I've still got these somewhere, although I never really got on with them at all
Belotti Gamma (bona fide speed skate)
Junker (customer moulded speed skate)

If you spoke to someone like Hans, he'd say just go straight for a proper speed skate boot, although I would suggest that you would find it easier to skate in something like what you've posted 'cos of the extra support.

Again, the only thing I can really suggest is to find somewhere to try them. Remember also that speed skating frames are realyl adjustable. Just 'cos you don't get on with them immediately doesn't mean you can't - it will most likely just be that you need to adjust the lateral position of the frame to get it right for your foot.

If you're back in the UK any time soon, I've still got my old Belottis in the garage which you're welcome to try if you want a feel for 'no cuff'.

Re:Speedskating for dummies... - 12:38 10 Jun 10 Just been looking at the site that you linked to, you can get the bont Jet for the same price - I know a couple of guys who use these and have been complimentary of their fit. They're definitely heat mouldable too. ! Skate Monkey !
