Socks? - 00:22 15 Apr 05 I have noticed that some people wear thick socks with skates (practically hiking book socks) and some thin. I was wondering what peoples views were!?

So thick or thin socks!? Perhaps I should set up a poll!?
Good luck to all the skaters at Dorney Lake tonight doing the 24 hour skate for charity. I'll be down there at 7pm to join you for a bit - Twitter Status

Re:Socks? - 00:41 15 Apr 05 From a physiological point of view, thicker socks will make you more prone to blisters, unless your skates are waaaay tight. Je suis belle et ça ne demande aucun effort

Re:Socks? - 01:55 15 Apr 05 Surely if you have thicker socks then your less prone to blisters!? That is why hikers wear them. Good luck to all the skaters at Dorney Lake tonight doing the 24 hour skate for charity. I'll be down there at 7pm to join you for a bit - Twitter Status

Re:Socks? - 02:09 15 Apr 05 They let your feet move around in the boot, giving rise to blisters and pressure areas. FWIW, I've always found thin socks better for walking/hiking too. I spose it's a case of suck it and see. Je suis belle et ça ne demande aucun effort

Re:Socks? - 10:07 15 Apr 05 Dan / Frannybee

Here's my 2 cents worth.

I wear thicker socks as my skates are a fraction too big ( the next size down was too small - go figure it!!) But in general, I thought the principle for sporting socks were that they were thick at pressure points to cushion any effects.

My think socks (Decathlon skating socks) have support areas, i.e. the shin / calf areas and also have thicker/ more padded areas i.e. soles and heel area.

I think as always it comes down to personal preference and how "delicate" you are !!

Re:Socks? - 13:53 15 Apr 05 I use thin socks most of the time because I got told the more padding in the boot, the less energy gets transferred to the wheels from you push. Something to do with damping????

Re:Socks? - 10:01 17 Apr 05 Yeah - thin socks are better, but it's true that some skates don't fit quite right, so you need a bit of extra padding. I heard that that the top speed skaters often don't wear socks at all, 'cos it interferes with their feeling of the boot... ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Socks? - 13:35 25 Apr 05 I generally wear whatever socks I'm wearing before I put my skates on but if I know I'm going to do a lot of skating I put on white sports-style socks which are better for absorbing sweat and a bit more comfy if you're on skates all day.

BTW, many of my socks have holes in the toes from me wrinkling my feet up inside the boots shen I'm skating! Does anyone else get this as a common occurrence?

Re:Socks? - 23:45 25 Apr 05 ah, you too!

i find swapping them over means you get twice the useage and strangely two holes per sock!
best to stop using them once they go crusty!!

Re:Socks? - 08:59 26 Apr 05 I don't make holes in my socks but I am constantly breaking toenails badly, as in the nail splits lengthways! I think my books are literally half a size too small!!

Oh and don't forget you can get extra use out of socks by turning them inside out... works on underpants too
