Re:bearings - 21:20 13 Jun 06 When it comes to buying bearings:

are all e.g. ABEC 5 bearings much the same? Or is there much more to think about than the ABEC (or equivalent) rating?

Re:bearings - 21:36 13 Jun 06 Cor, anyone would think your trying to start a flame war! I'm glad we are all a friendly bunch!

If you can ignore the marketing then THIS PAGE gives a very good overview of why I personally think that ABEC ratings are hogwash when choosing bearings for skates.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that all ABEC rated bearings are crap, quite the opposite but I have seen ABEC7 bearings that are rubbish and ABEC3 bearings that are great. To my knowledge there is no way of rating bearings, you pays your money and takes your choice

If you do want "skate" bearings then both Bones and ILQ bearings are actually designed for the job. Again, I'm not actually saying that they are any better just that they are actually designed for skating.

Re:bearings - 21:54 13 Jun 06 I come in peace.

Suddenly my ABEC 5 Decathlon bearings seem less of a bargain than they did moments ago.

Why do I keep mentioning Decathlon in my posts? That is it, I shan't mention the D word again. I don't even like the place.

Re:bearings - 07:12 14 Jun 06 Nothing wrong with decathlon.

Dan's right about the ABEC thing, although if your sticking with one brand then ABEC 7 rated bearings will tend to be quicker than ABEC 5 from the same brand.

To be honest, you mostly won't notice any difference between 3s, 5s or 7s until you start getting quick.

When you buy, though, I would personally make sure that you can open them up to give them a clean. It's just personal preference and other will say get sealed ones, but I like to be able to take my stuff apart to service it.
