Re:caring for my new rollers - 22:46 21 May 05 ABEC 7 = v.good, but if you're not speeding around with the big boys you probably wouldn't notice the difference between 3, 5 or 7. Dan and the others will fill you in on cleaning and maintenance of your new babies. Je suis belle et ça ne demande aucun effort

Re:caring for my new rollers - 09:15 22 May 05 I'm not 100% on quads, 'cos I've never had a set (well, about 25 years ago I had some that you strapped to you feet - very shonky)

If you've got Abec 7s in there then that is indeed very good. They're not as robust as 3s or 5s, but they'll be quicker and smoother.

Basically what I tend to do as far as cleaning goes is just use them until they seem to need a clean - there might be a noise, or the wheels won't be spinning so nicely, or whatever. So I'll take all the wheels off, take the bearings out, remove a shield, give 'em a wash in my turbo wash tub, re-gress / oil, bung 'em back in then got for a quick skate to dry them out properly. Hasn't failed yet.

But don't do it for the sake of it. Just leave them. Depending how often you use them you could easily get 6 months - 1 year without having to do anything.

Also, go to serpentineroad.com and do a search there. People are always asking about bearing cleaning and there's often some useful information.

Re:caring for my new rollers - 12:25 22 May 05 There is a post on this site about Bearing Cleaning that you can see HERE

It is also worth pointing out that some people (such as me) believe that the ABEC rating is hogwash! The ABEC rating for bearings was created for industrial machines that have to be built to hugely high tolerances and where axle speeds are VERY fast, much much faster than a skate wheel. As soon as you do a jump on a skate even a small jump an inch into the air you have actually already exceeded the stress rating of an ABEC 3 bearing and especially an ABEC 7 bearing. Yes an ABEC 7 bearing is a MUCH better bearing built to much higher tolerances than an ABEC 3 bearing however either work fine for skates.

A good write up of the differences can be found HERE.

I am not trying to start a flame war as I'm sure you are finding everyone has their own opinions on what they like/don't like but I thought I would let you know the other side of the story

Re:caring for my new rollers - 15:16 22 May 05 That probably does all follow, but I know that my five wheelers and my Mag Elite 3s roll for longer and quicker than my XMax. Having said that, the first two also use microbearings, which are (surprise surprise) smaller than the standard ones found in your average XMax.

We could prove this by finding a hill and we'll all sit at teh top and then just roll down. I'd bet that people with teh Abec 7s get there first, although the difference would not be much...

Re:caring for my new rollers - 21:13 22 May 05 Hmm?
well, from personal experience i find a good set of ABEC 7's will allow you to glide for a lot longer but not neccessarily faster, however, that is not the whole story, i have a second set of 7's that feel slower and harder work to use, but they were a cheap set and greased rather than oiled. the engineering bit is true though, best thing is find a type you like and stick to it, just don't spend too much!

Re:caring for my new rollers - 12:46 25 May 05 ABEC!! Bah humbug... the abec ratings are the biggest load of rubbish that the marketing people shove on us. It is possible to have a plastic abec 7 bearing that will roll slower than an Abec 1 steel bearing.

The most important things to look for are
Grade of steel used in the bearing,
Tolerances of the raceways (where the bearings roll)

Since we dont get to see this i usually go by brands that i have tried and like:

ILQ 9
BSB
HTB
Powell
Bones

My all time top two are

ILQ9 Classic - Nearly maintance free (1 year on I havent had to clean/service them despite sking in the rain countless times)
ILQ9 Pro - Great for speeding
BSB titanium - great all rounders
BSB Swiss - How fast do these thing go....
