Re:sport socks - 10:26 18 Jul 06 I tried those 'wicking' socks that you can buy at the sports shops for around £10/12 a pair. They caused havoc with my feet. I got even more rubbing, and tram lines all round the ankles from the inner wicking layer. Many people have told me not to wear thick socks for skating.

I've not really found the answer, but I have found sticking to smooth finish socks, at least 80% cotton, (100% without ribbed finish seems almost impossible to find) works best.

Re:sport socks - 12:38 18 Jul 06 I used to wear Nike socks with my speed boots. LeMans I went barefoot awith EeziFit ankle booties (or something) and it was great. FSKs, the best ones I've found are John Rocha socks from Debenhams.

Don't worry about wearing thick socks - the difference it makes is negligible unless you're in speed boots anyway.

If you don't have enormous feet (over a size 9) you'll get away with women's socks - smooth finish 100% cotton socks are everywhere for girls.

The other 20% is normally something to add stretch and durability to the cotton since it's a completely inelastic fibre on its own. Basically, cotton socks stretch out and fall down without something added to the base fibre.

Re:sport socks - 19:24 18 Jul 06 I suppose what type of skate and its fit would affect what you wear sock wise. Some Ice Hockey players don't wear any socks and have a very tight fitting boot. Personally I use technical ski socks with all my skates (and ski boots) as they have different materials, thickness dependant on the amount and type of contact between foot and boot. They also have wicking properties too.

Re:sport socks - 09:30 19 Jul 06 Well the usual 5 pairs-in-a-pack ones I generally live in have left me with blister when building up longer distances, but plasters on vulnerable spots helped yesterday. I expect it is a case of my feet not being toughened up for long distance ! but I have always felt comfier skating in socks that are thicker, just I dont own many and forget about things like socks when I do go clothes shopping, and that isnt very often!
Also I am practising in cheap old skates (have salomons but I am being poncey and keeping them 'nice' whereas they may be a better fit than the cheap ones!)

Re:sport socks - 13:14 19 Jul 06 you should practice in skates which you'll be using. The frame position / length / boot etc will affect what you do and how you do it. If you're not used to a certain skate, it could well be to your detriment. ! Skate Monkey !

Re:sport socks - 13:28 19 Jul 06 I normally wear whatever socks are clean, but have so far tried to use thick ones because my Rollerblade Twister Pluses are very slightly roomy and I've always felt that a thicker sock gave more control...

HOWEVER, on Sunday afternoon I went out for a skate and realised when I opened my backpack that I'd forgotten my socks... Anticipating problems, pain and wobbles, I got the skates on anyway and was astonished to find that not only was I cool and comfy, but my control of the skates and general balance and confidence were miles better in bare feet!! I'm still fighting problems with pronation, particularly on my left foot, which is stubborn as hell and needs constant repositioning, but in bare feet, I seemed to be able to sense the middle edge much more easily, and just felt much happier and more relaxed.

OK, so my skates smelt like a brewery afterwards, and yes, there's a small red patch on my right ankle where the boot was rubbing, but otherwise pretty good...

Any ideas as to why this might be? (the good skating, obviously - not the sore, smelly aftermath!)

Re:sport socks - 03:03 20 Jul 06 I don't wear socks or wear very very very very thin socks...they normall degrade after a few wears. The main reason are my boots are very tight fitting, maybe too tight in fact. With socks on, i can't feel the boot anymore so I'm not able to control my feet.

This is very true when I wear my speed boots. With the socks on you can't feel the boot anymore. When i wear socks with them, I wear a very thin cycling sock. This is only to stop the rubbing on my ankles and me bleading all the time. Blood, doesn't make my ankles look sexy.
