Something I found out that I never knew about M$ licences is that they give you "downgrade rights".
I hope you manage to sort this out.

As I understand these rights (And I may be wrong):-

1. If you have a full M$ licence, then you can downgrade.

2. If you have an OEM licence, (as you would normally get from a supplier with software installed on a new machine), you have no downgrade rights.

3. If the supplier installs an OEM licence, then the supplier has rights to downgrade when the machine is shipped. You can later upgrade if you wish.

4. OEM licences are only legitimate if sold installed on a new machine. If the machine is substantially changed, then the licence is no longer valid. This includes replacement of the HDD or M/B.

Either way, your key won't work. You would have to contact M$ for a new key, and convince them you are eligible.

Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 12:06 18 Apr 08 Yeah, your right, as usual M$ don't make it easy! And the advice I was given wasn't accurate either!

So, while I do have a full licence (not an OEM, although I was expecting to get an OEM) it seems you can only downgrade "volume licences".

The licence for hardware replacement is actually quite cleaver. Each part of your hardware has points, you can change certain parts (add memory, change a HD etc.) as they have low points but as soon as the count goes above a magic number you will have to make a call to M$ to reactivate. This seems quite common but doesn't seem to be a problem.

I gave Vista a quick try as it was on the machine, it crashed 3 times in an hour and was horribly slow. It has to go!

I am over the moon with the hardware, gone are the days of Dell not being upgrade friendly. The box is really well designed and nicely laid out. I am still shocked I got so much hardware for the money.

I'm now working though copies of XP trying to find a licence key that will work. I have 12 coppies of XP and about 20 keys but I don't know which go with which!

Anyone got a copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 and a valid licence key
