Decathlon wheels - 20:02 12 Jun 06 Does anyone/ has anyone used decathlon wheels?

They are nice and cheap, so before I am forced to bite the bullet and spend 2/3 times as much on Hyper wheels, does anyone have a view on how good decathlon wheels are (at rolling/gripping/lasting/anything else that is important about a wheel)?

I'm going to use them for park/street/novice slalom skating.

They are a perfectly good wheels, just nothing special as far as I know!

Re:Decathlon wheels - 21:23 12 Jun 06 The dilemma, now trilemma, I have is this.

I don't really like my recreational skates. *I admit that vanity is part of the reason why*

Option 1:
Skates cost £80. If I get the wheels Jason recommended, or some other decent wheels, that's around £50. Over 60% of the cost of the skates. A big investment in these skates I don't really like.

Option 2:
Buy cheap wheels, around £20 from Decathlon. Perhaps a false economy in the long term if Jason is right that Hyper something or other 84a are 300% more durable. But less of an investment.

Option 3:
Save up some more money and buy the Fsks for around £150 which would anyway come with new and decent wheels. So really only spending an extra £100 as compared to option 1.

Humph. Grrr. ???

Re:Decathlon wheels - 21:32 12 Jun 06 Hypers are good and recomended by a lot of people (no me personally though)

Personally I would go for options 2 & 3

Re:Decathlon wheels - 22:03 12 Jun 06 Thanks.

What are the main differences I'd notice between salomon reacreational and salomon FSKs?

Re:Decathlon wheels - 22:21 12 Jun 06 Cor, now your asking the hard questions!!

It's a bit like saying, what's the differance between an VW and an Audi. Probably a bad analogy (I'm not a car person) but at the end of the day, they are both skates with wheels, bearings, a frame and a boot

I personally like the FSK's as they are very good multi-purpose boot. They are good quality at the higher end of the skate range but you can set them up relatively how you like. The boot is the important bit (and the FSK boot one of the best boots with heat moulding) as your foot spends all it's time in there. The rest can all be changed to how you like it, differant wheels, bearings, frames etc.

Actually, the Salomon Inline website has a compare feature where you can look at some of the differances.

Re:Decathlon wheels - 22:39 12 Jun 06 Thanks for the link

I tried on some Crossmax S-Lab2 today and had a skate round decathlon. The thing I noticed immediately was much more support. my boots have a strap around the calf and laces, nothing else, notably, nothing to strap the ankle. My boots also give a lot. I reckon that makes them far less responsive than say, FSKs.

On the other hand, my boots are supremely comfy, and feel a bit like slippers.

Re:Decathlon wheels - 23:01 12 Jun 06 That'll be the power strap (I know it's a naff name but bear with us).

Power straps are built into some boots and is a strap that actively pushes your heal into the back & bottom of the boot. You can buy aftermarket power straps which is a clip that you fasten around the heal of the boot and the front of the skate.

By far the most important strap on my skates, I can skate with the laces undone, or the cuff unclipped but not without the powerstrap tight.

Good god, all these posts, anyone would think I know what I'm talking about! I'll wait for Lemming to come online in the morning, he'll put me in my place!

A lot of people like to use FSKs for general all round skating, and for most people, it's a good choice.
Personally, I don't like how they fit (or rather my feet don't). I much prefer Twisters or Seba (I have both + FSKs), and find them extremely responsive - more so than I ever did with FSKs.
When I first started skating, I had a pair of Salomon Rec skates. Like you said, they are as comfy as anything, but they are restrictive if you want to do other types of skating. Plus, a lot of the "freeskate" skates are customisable, e.g. you can change frames / liners etc, tailoring it to your needs.

If you're looking to spend around £50 on a set of wheels, do explore the possibility of geting a new set of skates - don't forget, you also get a nice shiny set of bearings too There are loads of good "Freeskate" around the £150 mark, which for what you get, is good value for money.
Try on as many different pairs as you can, as everyone's foot is different, and you may not necessarily go with the norm.
