Help required - 10:57 19 May 05 Hi All,

I need some help with this site. I think this site needs a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page(s) as the same questions are comming up on the forums. Don't get me wrong, I think this is absolutely great as it means that people are using the site however I think the forums should be more of a place to chat and we need to have a seperate area for core information. Subjects like places to skate, Events and Equiptment, alot of the same info that is already in the forums but typed up nicely.

The trouble I have is that I just don't have time to go through all the forum posts and type things up properly so I'm looking for volenteers Please PM me if you would lke to do this and be part of this site.

Re:Help required - 16:24 19 May 05 Sounds good, we can have more than one author so anyone else can also volentear and we can all share the load. The way it will work is that you write an article on this site, I would check/approve it and it gets published automatically Embedding gravatar.com icons in the Goodwood Roller Marathon site to give each racer a unique avatar that they can change if they want. - Twitter Status

Re:Help required - 20:43 22 May 05 Maybe we should start with a list of questions? Then we can write answers to these for you to vet, edit and post?

Also, you'll need some kind of message to tell people to RTFF (Read the FAQ) before posting questions about stuff.

Obvious ones that spring to mind (having just had a wander through the forums) include:

1. Where and when can I skate? (Include links to other sites / multimap or whoever to show where the Arean is, etc, and detail costs)
This answer should also give some indication of skating ability required to participate, so Arena stuff would be anyone, WNS / FNS would be people who can skate quite well and stop (for example)

2. What sort of skates should I buy? (groan) - links to londonskaters I'm thinking - not sure if we should ask LS-Mike about this to make sure he's happy.

3. Where can I buy my skates?

4. What should I be learning to do? Move, stop, turn, slalom, erm, cartwheel I guess...

5. How do I clean my skates?

6. Do I REALLY need to wear pads?

7. How can I get skating lessons?

That's a start, anyway. I would anticipate a lot of info would be links - I'm not going to write out a load of stuff that already exists, especially when it's more accurate and written by people with far more experience than me...

Everyone - lets post questions that we're often asked here, then we can get the answers flowing...

Re:Help required - 23:35 22 May 05 Nice suggestions Lemming, thank you.

First thing is for me to write the code behind the scenes to display the articles. The plan is then that that I would activate peoples accounts to be "authors", they would see a link in the User Menu to write an article where they could type in whatever they wanted and suggest a category to submit it for. The article would then come to me as the admin where I would check/publish it. If people wanted to e-mail me articles that is fine too Oh and obviously, you would be credited as the author.

So it looks like it is waiting on me!
  1. Write site-wide code
  2. Make a list of required articles
  3. Choose subsections required
  4. Write a standard template so all articles look roughly the same
So much for taking the load off

Re:Help required - 06:09 23 May 05 Not really - I mean, to start with it could just be a single HTML FAW which linked to the lower pages. Then you'd only have to format the text in line with internal bookmarks in HTML, which is easy (as I'm sure you know, 'cos you've done all this other stuff).

Of course, we wouldn't have cool searching or anything. I'll see what I can dig up for this stuff as far as answers go, although this is actually a huge undertaking as far as I can make out.

Re:Help required - 16:14 03 Jun 05 Another couple of Q's:

>How do you take the brake off the back of your skates? - one I need to know about!
>Which skates (inline / quad) are better for which moves?
>What level of ability am I at skating?
>What's skating? (Well maybe not...)
