New skates... unsure - 15:57 24 Jul 06 I was thinking of getting some 3Vs but my mum says she doesn't want me getting expensive skates if my feet are going to grow out of them in a few months. That's okay, but since Salomon are stopping making skates soon I need to make a desicion. Help!

Re:New skates... unsure - 16:43 24 Jul 06 I know most of us like Salomon but they aren't the only skate manufactuer. I think you were after the 3V's and Rollerblade do "Twisters" which is their slalom skate and highly rated by pro slalomers! Re:New skates... unsure - 17:10 24 Jul 06 3vs are great. get them now with your mum's money, maybe a bit big if your feet are growing like bamboo. start saving for the twisters (which presumably will be with us for the foreseeable future) for when the 3vs don't fit.

Although Dogsbody is totally right that Twisters are v. popular with top slalomers, and are I'm told, highly praised by french freeriders, the frame is derided by all of the above. I've never seen a video of a skater in twisters who hasn't customised. they always have other frames, usually either Sebas or vipers. moral of the story: beware that if you buy twisters, you'll probably also need to buy other frames too. (Note that UFS frames (as on fsks) don't fit, or at least you can't just bolt them on without further customisation).

finally, its not uncommon to see people replace the liner in the twister boot, because it's a bit thin.

but everyone loves the boot...

Re:New skates... unsure - 19:43 24 Jul 06 Mitchell. Save your money. Don't buy skates that don't fit unless you get a great deal on them.

You might be able to sell them on, but do you want to take that risk?

My advice. Stick with what you've got and wait until your feet are stable. There will always be slalom skates out there and the 3Vs are by no means regarded as the best...

on reflection that is the more sound advice...

I agree that 3Vs are by no means the best for slalom, but if there's a better allrounder for freestyle I don't know of it (but would like to).

Re:New skates... unsure - 20:01 24 Jul 06 a) customs don't count!
b) disagree. the extra powerstrap on the front of the 3v boot, I think is very useful, particuarly for toe wheeling. I'd go 3v frame + 3v boot + Slab liner.

Re:New skates... unsure - 20:03 24 Jul 06 Fair enough. I find that velcro thingy totally useless, but each to their own..

I agree that mixing them up was cheating a bit..

Re:New skates... unsure - 20:15 24 Jul 06 I don't want new skates specifically for slalom, I want a basic all-rounder pair of skates.

Re:New skates... unsure - 20:16 24 Jul 06 That's tougher given the FSK's have gone

I really need to learn more about the other manufactuers!
