Dry bearings - 16:49 31 Oct 06 Does anybody know of any make of bearings that run dry i.e. no oil or grease? Or alternatively, any recomendations for skate maintenance in dry and dusty conditions? It might be that over oiling is the recomended practice.

Re:Dry bearings - 17:12 31 Oct 06 Buy waterproof ones if you can't be arsed to maintain them. Or just maintain them - it's only a half hour job... ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Dry bearings - 22:06 31 Oct 06 My £0.02 would be to use oiled bearings anyway, yes the dust would stick to the oil but it will stick to the outside and actually help protect them.

The only other thing that specifically match your need would be Bones Labyrinth Bearings but i know nothing about them other than the marketing.

Re:Dry bearings - 07:56 01 Nov 06 You're better off using greased bearings if you want lower maintenance - oiled ones take a lot of looking after. ! Skate Monkey !

Lemming, it is not the case that I cannot be arsed to maintain them rather that the place I am off to next is extremely hot and dusty; the dust having a texture/consistentcy similar to talc or ground French chalk. It (the dust), being so fine, gets everywhere and, when mixed with oil or grease, makes a fine grinding paste.

I doubt that the opportunity to do much skating will arise but if it does then I would like to be properly prepared; this includes having the proper set up (wheels and bearings). So I asked the civil question(s) to draw upon the experience of others to assist me. If the response had been that a bearing with an improved seal was available, at a reasonable price, then fine. Similarly, if the best response was to just reduce the maintainance interval and over oil the bearings, then that too would be an option to consider. Both of those responses I would class as being civil.

You appear to have high personal standards, and opinions, on skate maintainance and in light of this I should like to share a couple of snipits of advice:

1. If you continue to judge people by your own high standards then be prepared to be continually disappointed in life.

2. Do not pass judgement on people when you either ignore or are not in possesion of all the facts.

Re:Dry bearings - 18:26 01 Nov 06 Not really - I pass on best practice advice - that doens't mean I necessarily do it.

Why would I be disappointed if you didn't follow my advice? It's your choice whether to do it or not, and I don't claim to know everything about skates, nor their maintenance. I have, however, been in the situation of having to maintain my skates regularly while away and had to do a complete bearing refit two days on the trot after spending most of the day skating. It was hell though.

If you want a civil response take greased bearings and ignore cleaning them until you get back. The grease keeps the dirt out of the moving parts and you shouldn't notice a major difference.

If you don't want my advice then don't listen. I don't care...
If you didn't think that was a civil reponse then I apologise - it was not my intention. But I'll likely do it again and again and again 'cos that's how I write and how I pass the information on. Just so you know.

Re:Dry bearings - 19:17 01 Nov 06 People need to earn respect, not be gifted it. I appreciate that's a two way process.

Take the criticism like a good little boy and try and show a bit more respect for your elders

You see - now that's a step backwards.

Now if you had said this in the first place my answer may have been different! This is not the sort of "dust" you usually find in the UK!

2. Do not pass judgement on people when you either ignore or are not in possesion of all the facts.
hmmmmmmmmmmm, and to people that don't give all the facts!!

Anyway, enough of this crap, I did an interview yesterday saying what a friendly place this site was!
