SPEEDCAMP LONDON - Go Faster workshop - 20:32 13 Jul 07 Hello skaters,
I just wanted to pop in and inform you about the following;

SPEEDCAMP London 11-12th August.

Barry Publow is coming to the UK for the first time to run a weekend Speed workshop in London. This is a unique opportunity to gain an insight into a wealth of knowledge about speed and benefit from Barry’s expert experience of speed skating, of racing and of coaching skaters.

Typically you should already be capable of completing a London Friday Night skate or similar to take part in this workshop.

Barry Publow is considered a leading authority in the areas of sport-specific technique, biomechanics, and training application. He is well known as the first author to study, dissect, write about and create a teaching method for the "double-push" [in-line speed skating technique]..

An accomplished skater in his own right, Barry is a former National (inline) Champion and still holds Canadian records in the 300m and 500m. He has competed for Canada at both World Championships and Pan American Games, and was a member of the National Team from 1994 2000). He is currently a member of the Bont North America Racing Team and gives workshops all over the world.

The workshop will run roughly as follows:

Session 1 - Friday, August 10
8:00 - 10:00 pm: Friday Night Skate - Meet Barry! Social skate, and ask a question or two.

Session 2 – Saturday, August 11
9-1 pm Dryland skating drills, imitations, and alignment/balance exercises
1-3 pm Lunch break
3-5 pm On-skate technical training

6-8 Video Review
Session 3 – Sunday, August 12
9-1 On skate technical training
1-3 Lunch break
3-5 On-skate and off-skate technical training

Price is £130 for the weekend.

Barry has a comprehensive and methodical way of explaining technique combined with practical drills and challenges to try out at each step.

Video footage taken during the course will be reviewed on the Saturday evening. This is reeeeeally usefull as you have no idea what you actually skate like until somebody films you and then dissects every part of your movements like he does. His comments are always astonishingly specific and can be quite revelatory.

See www.breakawayskate.ca/london for full itinerary or ask me for more details: Linda@skatefresh.com / 07807 919438

Re:SPEEDCAMP LONDON - Go Faster workshop - 11:23 18 Jul 07 Pas de problème
Following that post, I bought and just received Barry's book called 'speed on skates'.
Being at work, I can't (shouldn't) read it now, but from what I've seen, it looks very interesting (even though a bit old). Very different from the usual 'learn how to skate'-type books, instead explaining everything through kinematics, physiology, biomechanics, etc. going from basic movements to training to racing strategy and much more. It is usually quite hard to get your coach to explain sensibly why you should do that and back it up with real facts. And to me it makes a big difference (not that I don't trust my coaches...)
It really makes me wanna go back to training seriously (weather permitting )

Re:SPEEDCAMP LONDON - Go Faster workshop - 14:48 30 Jul 07 Hi Lemming, hope you enjoyed Sunday at Goodwood as much as I did (much congrats to the organisers by the way).

Yes its a top book - and a unique one. No one else had written anything so detailed and scientific about speed technique.

If you want to sign up for this you should do it quickly. Deadline for registration was meant to be the end of July, however there are still places available.

By the way this course is not just for speed skaters - leisure skaters are also welcome as long as you're not a complete beginner.
