The places you are going should not be too bad hygiene wise but sticking to bottle water as already mentioned is a good idea. It's worth taking some iodine drops and the taste tablets too as a back up if you can't get bottled or to boil water. The Iodine can come in handy for other uses as well.
Don't put all you eggs in one basket. If you are taking two bags make sure you split your stuff, especially clothes, between the two just in case one of your bags gets sent somewhere else. Similarly, if you are only taking one bag: take some of the stuff out and put it into a soft holdall but don't then refill the first bag with more stuff.
If you are using a rucksack use a cover bag for it or at the least make sure you tape up all the straps. Most airports will provide you with a plastic bag. Nothing worse than seeing someone's rucksack blocking the carousel by getting a strap caught and then realising it is yours
If you know where you are going to be staying arrange to having new supplies to be there and waiting for you by posting them there.
Take a change of clothes with you on the plane, in case of stops or delays where you won't be able to get to your hold baggage.
Learn to say "hello, please, thank you and goodbye" at the least as they will go a long way.
Take all the medicines you might use (pain killer, anti-inflamatory, allergy, dodgy stomach) with you. Also start taking pro biotic yoghurt drinks (actimel) as they do help to build up you immune system to bugs especially the ones that can cause travellers tummy.
Travellers cheques, mobile phone that can work in the countries you visit as sometimes they can be cheaper to use than the local phones.
A lightweight sleeping bag (1 season) will come in really handy for delays at airports, bus stations or if you have to doss down somewhere. (probably got a spare one knocking around somewhere.
Anyway gone on long enough give us ring if you need more info/kit.
