Re:Asia - 19:17 01 Aug 07 Well hello from Korea!! Naomi and I finally arrived after our 11 hour flight from Heathrow to Incheon airport. The journey was not too bad although I did seem to have trouble sleeping! An Seong Bae (Korean freestyle slalom skater) then met us at the airport and took us to his apartment where we will stay for a few days.

As soon as we arrived it was skates on and out to meet all the other skaters. There were so many new names to try and remember and I am desperately trying to pick up some of the language as I go to try and speak to people! Naomi's Korean speech is, however, highly impressive and I am incredibly jealous Everyone here was so friendly and welcoming. I picked up one or two new things on the cones today which was cool (whether I can remember them all or not is a different matter!).

We went out for dinner and a few beers after we skated - I was very brave and tried some dried squid thing and some kind of dried fish thing too! (Considering I do not eat fish it was an achievement for me! There were other good things on the table too though which we could tuck in to!)

Bound to do loads more skating tomorrow - I am hoping to try and maybe come up with a run to just have a bash at the qualifications when we get to Shanghai but if things don't go to plan then I just wont compete!Max...Da Jin should be out to skate tomorrow so I will say hello from you!

I also heard lots of skaters from Europe I met in Barcelona last year (e.g. Rekil and Vladimir from Russia and Seba, Chloe, Igor, Christophe Flinoir etc from France will be coming to Shanghai! (I have mainly included names here in case anyone wanted to search you tube videos and see what these people are like!)

Anyway it is 4am here now so time for bed! Will post again soon - take care everyone!!

Re:Asia - 03:54 05 Aug 07 Hello from Seoul!

After spending 2 nights in Incheon and skating with the people there we were picked up by a skater from Seoul and driven to the Olympic park where they skate. In Korea there are different skate 'teams' (groups of slalom skaters). So Incheon was with the 'Crazy Slalom' team and a couple from 'Joystick.' In Seoul we are skating with the 'No Break' team. The city is awesome!

Yesterday I wanted to go and see some of the city rather than just skate so we were chauffer driven by a skater around the places we wanted to see. We started at one of the largest palaces in the city which was beautiful and one of the buildings is actually on their 100,000 Won money/bank note (it is about GBP 5.80). Then we went to street in INsadong where there are lots of traditional souvenir type things like Korean masks, decorative bags etc. After we moved on to a large shopping centre (like a department store - was hoping to get some cothes/shoes etc but not really much to my taste!). We finished by getting a cable car up to N'Seoul tower on Namsan (South Mountain) once it had got dark. Then we went to the top of the tower to see over the city. The view of the city and the Han River which runs through it (rather like the Thames runs through London) was very beautiful.

In the car on our journey we got to watch Transformers on their laptop which was great fun as I didnt get a chance to see the film at home before I left! What suprised me most is how they all just leave sat nav systems and laptops on show in their cars! Could never do that in England and expect it all still there when you get back to the car! So it all seems quite safe. They also all have very up to date mobile phones which you can watch TV on very clearly too - maybe we have them in England but I am still behind?!)

Every night we have gone out for food and beers! The beer here is more like shandy though so it is very easy to drink and not strong at all (Great for me as I am not a beer drinker really!). There are also some very yummy ice cream/frozen milkshake things we have become quite attatched to drinking!

Humour in Korea seems to translate very well across the language barrier. They understand word play very well so there is always lots of laughing when we are all out!

Had lots of rain yesterday (someone said a typhoon?!) but it was not too bad. The weather here is generally warm, sticky and cloudy (not sun tan weather so don't expect me to come back looking golden brown!).

Anyway...better go now...we are skating at a different place to the olympic park today and then we are being taken back to Incheon to stay with Da Jin for one night and then An Seong Bae again until we go to China on Weds. Hope all is OK at home.

xxx

Re:Asia - 14:48 07 Aug 07 OK....we are one week into our trip now and this is our final night in Korea! We fly to China tomorrow morning. Sooooooo excited!

After we had been in Seoul we travelled back to Incheon (loaded up with many little presents given to us by the skaters we had met!). We skated with several skaters before Da Jin took us back to his family apartment to stay for one night. His parents were very friendly and welcoming and showed a great interest in his skating. He also had a really cute little dog which was just a tiny bundle of excitable white fluff!! It kept jumping on the spot on its hind legs!!

The next day Da Jin and his friend took Naomi and I shopping and my god what an experience. At just 15 years old they are already such gentlemen! They were happy to follow us round any shop we wanted, gave us opinions on which things looked better than others and when we bought stuff...they even carried our shopping! I wish British men would take a few tips

Anyway...I have actually drafted a run now which...if I get enough time to practice...I might actually use for the competition. I am planning to possibly use the music '1,2 step' by Ciara for any of you who are familiar with it?! I have also taken to writing a few moves down with sketches on paper so I do not competely forget everything I have observed/been shown so far! I am having to choose between practicing and learning new moves or working on a competition routine at the moment! It's a tough decision!!

Had a dry day weather wise yesterday to skate but it was wet again most of the day today. We went to see a few sights in Incheon, I also bought some new plastic cones as they seem to be preferable to my rubbery ones (they are cheaper out here!) - although Da Jin had actually given me his OWN set of cones as a present!!! I was so excited!! (secretly hoping they will allow me to skate like him?!!! )

Other random things which have suprised me...how much noise locusts make in the trees!!! It is like nothing I have ever heard before! Also....the subway/underground network is incredibly clean, the carriages are much larger and less cramped, but also...they are air conditioned. So travelling about is far better than in London!

Anyway...better go and pack for Shanghai now and find my passport again! If I don't get a chance to write in Shanghai (I have a feeling there will be lots of late nights out and as we are not staying in someones house I doubt internet access will be as easy!) I will post up all about the competition when we get back to Korea on Monday/Tuesday!!

Take care everyone! Miss you all xxx

PS...I am slowly picking up a few Korean phrases! Woohoo!
