Re:hampton court ice skating anyone? - 18:59 25 Nov 07I'm thinking about during the week 10 - 14th for an all day offer, worth a day off work I think.
If I'm doing a stroll then I'll probably do the hyde park one. When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Re:hampton court ice skating anyone? - 23:09 13 Dec 07Well its certainly different from wheels, probably mostly due to the pretty rubish skates they provide. My normal shoe size is ten and I was wearing two pairs of socks which makes my inline skates a bit more snug so I asked for a ten, I went out on the ice and they were really loose fitting so I went back and got a 9 which held my foot better but were to tight in the width, the skates are held on by three buckes one for the toe area another further up the foot and an ankle bukle, all three slip and so you never really get them done up right. Anyway they are useable I found that I seem to have less grip than I do on my inlines but strangely it did not seem to matter as the skate catches again, hard to explain but it was like the pushing skate slips a few inches a bit like inline-ing on a slippery surface. Whilst turning both skates feel they are doing the same slipping and you can also hear them slipping as they cross the ice. Having said that strangly I was doing better and faster cross overs then I can do on my inlines and with more confidence maybe it's the fear of hitting tarmac that makes doing it easier on ice. The other big difference I felt was the importance of keeping your weight above the skate, where we can move our weight forward on to our toes or back on to our heels it's not really possible on those skates, either the front or back digs into the ice so keeping the skates parallel to the ice was quite an issue and skating backwards was harder for me, perhaps this is telling me I need to work on my posture All in all it was a good experience and perhaps I can apply what I have learnt to my inline-ing. Oh Big tip here: Take your MP3 players, the provided music is not something I care to listern to, luckily I had mine. When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Re:hampton court ice skating anyone? - 23:31 13 Dec 07As I understand it, ice skates have more grip when you're on an edge, whereas inlines lose grip the further over you go. Mind, I can't imagine that they're particularly sharp...! Skate Monkey !
