Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skaters - 04:40 07 Jan 08 An interesting report from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons back in 1996...

Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to in-line skaters

... I'm sure MCS will agree with this

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 08:27 07 Jan 08 Surely that's obvious? It's like saying, watch out, just 'cos you're wearing a helmet doesn't mean that you won't end up with brain damage. ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 08:43 07 Jan 08 Unfortunately some folk don't think that way.

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 09:27 07 Jan 08 We wont ever be 100% safe but every little helps. When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 11:28 07 Jan 08 Yeah, wrist guards certainly didn't stop my wrist from breaking.

Red kindly picked up some double (back and front reinforced) wrist guards for me before I started skating again. When I mentioned this at the hospital, I was told that even this may not work as the fracture could still occur at the next available un-splinted section of the limb.

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 12:16 07 Jan 08 I certainly agree that they will protect against gravel rash. I have sliders try not to skate without mine for that reason, one of my hands still tingles every now and then due to gravel rash I got as a kid.

I also find that since I always wear pads I tend to throw my arms down first as I know that my hands are at least protected from the impact. One fall I had (last year I think) going quite slowly in the Arena, I fell without pads and nicely bruised my palms as I was so used to being able to put my hands down hard to stop even a slow fall

I think there are more to wrist guards than just wrist protection, I like my sliders

Re:Wrist guards may not prevent fractures to skate - 12:40 09 Feb 08 I agree with you Dodsbody, i always wear my sliders and they have saved me from sraps and cuts a number of times, and i've always worn knee
pads on street skates, older knees and legs take longer to heal, so some protection reduces the repair time!
