The opinion of spectators who play or have played was that this was a really good game to watch, but not necessarily a brilliantly tactical match.
Do you understand why we play on quads? It really is a stop/start/sprint/brake kind of game. Generally speaking, inline players get marked out of the game. Although faster when they get up to speed, they do not have the accelaration of quad skaters with toe stops.

That is only because you don't have stoppers on your inlines. And if you have the Bauer type quads the toe stoppers are too pathetic to use. It is the toe stops that allow you to build up speed very quickly.

I shoud say that the game restored my faith in roller hockey. I have seen a lot of very one sided games recently, and not very exciting as a result.

It is against the rules to hit the ball above shoulder height. I have only ever seen one bad injury from a hit in the head - mild concussion. But a helmet would not have helped as the ball came up off his foot and hit him on the chin.
I think the lack of head protection is an historcial thing. If the sport was beginning anew today, then helmets would be worn.

(a) Box
(b) Shin pads
(c) Knee pads
(d) Gloves
(e) Mouth guard - very few people wear one.
I also wear elbow pads - but then I fall over a lot.

Re:Roller Hockey tournament - 13:15 04 Feb 08To be honest I found it a little difficult to follow as I wasn't too sure of the rules - other than the hockey stick around the foot incident which I knew was a no-no . I can definitely see how in-lines would play a different game. It was very fast paced and also looked very aggressive and scary and I would want a face-mask even if I was only a ring-side spectator.
I have to admire all who play - but don' think it's for me...except our little quiet game at the end, that was quite fast enough for me

I guess the game was a bit more difficult to follow without knowing the rules. Essentially if you play the ball with the stick, keep the ball and stick below shoulder height, and you don't make contact with the other players, those are the rules.
We were largely giving fouls for the body contact aspect.

You do get used to it, although I will admit that my son Tom, who trains with Southsea and was doing the clock, thought it was a bit on the rough side.

Re:Roller Hockey tournament - 23:08 04 Feb 08Thanks Peter for the opportunity to come along to this. It made a change to watch something I hadn't seen before. I did notice that the toe stops were used for sprinting.
Very confusing to watch as I didn't know the rules. The "time-outs" seemed to be erratic. I could not tie them in with the clock. In fact the clock seemed to be reset at some stage.
First half got a little boring, partly due to lack of understanding the rules, and partly due to no goal scores. Second half got quite exciting at times.
I can't see me taking Roller Hockey up, but it was fun to have our own little match at the end.
