Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 14:02 10 Apr 08 Are these pretty enough for you??

I went out and lunch time to buy some magazines and Arbico are getting some great write ups.

Much as I keep getting drawn back to trying to buy components, I just did a very rough tot-up comparing a standard PC from Arbico with buying the core parts to upgrade my machine to roughly the same spec..... I would save over £200 buy buying a whole machine instead of separates!!

I'm shocked!
Very happy to hear they are bringing back Red Dwarf in 2009 for four episodes!! - Twitter Status

Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 17:03 10 Apr 08 If you give me your parts list, I could ask someone in China to price it up.
I brought my last system whilst in china and saved a bundle, the only draw backs;
Manuals might be in chinese but often come with english, you could probably download most, lets face it processors, ram and HD's etc don't need them.
I'd probably have to take most of it out of the boxes to hide it in a suitcase, stops customs seeing it because if they see it they will want import duty which is more if you do hide it but thats the gamble.
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 20:30 10 Apr 08 Thanks for the offer Elric but I kinda need a computer ASAP

Thanks for the reminder MCS, the computer fair could be great timing! The last few times I went ( a couple of years ago) their prices weren't very good but definitely worth a re-visit!

Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 12:53 15 Apr 08 Well I see you've changed your original spec then.
A quad core Intel 2.40GHz is hardly medium spec - nor is it AMD.
Did you manage to get XP rather than Vista?
That's an odd amount of RAM. Usually it would be 1Gb, 2Gb or 4GB.
It sounds like a nice machine. Is it desktop or tower?

Re:Advice Please - New PC required - 14:18 15 Apr 08 Only slightly and unfortunately money talks! Much as I really really wanted to build my own again I just couldn't make it add up

AMD was just a request, all my previous machines have been AMD, I much prefer their company ethincs and generally I think they make a better processor. Unfortunately Intel has the mass production skills and their chips are so amazingly cheap now! While it is quad core, it's a relatively slow speed one. Most "power" machines are still being sold using dual core as opposed to quad core as applications still aren't being written as multi-core aware so real time benchmarks rate dual core as faster. Quad cores also seem to be the ones being mass produced so they can be cheaper! It's all very strange. In the end you just have to dive in!

Something I found out that I never knew about M$ licences is that they give you "downgrade rights". That is, you (apparently) can use a Vista Key to install XP. I'm sure I can obtain an XP install disk from somewhere *cough* and it means that should I wish to move to Vista when it's stable (2015) then I already have a key...... I hate talking about this, I feel so dirty buying anything M$. Bows down to the almighty Tux, I'm sorry Linux, it's just one windows box, all my other machines are Linux and all the software on it will be open source too

The RAM is strange but it was part of the "free" upgrade. 2GB upgrade to 3GB, 20" upgrade to 22" LCD and £150 off. It's a Tower.
