Introduce yourself! - 21:49 03 Oct 04 Hi, we seem to have had some nervous guests online, why not sign up?

You can use this post to give us some background, you know the sort of thing, what you're into, where you skate, what your goals are, maybe post some pic's of events you've been to.

cheers

Drakey

Re:Introduce yourself! - 22:31 03 Oct 04 Oh well, i might as well start this off!

for those who don't know me,

I first took to skating on quads back in the late 70's and early 80's, never had any lessons just went to the Saturday Roller Disco at Farnborough Rec' with my brother and sister and went as fast as i could (nothing new there then! )

didn't keep it up, but did skate to work for a short time when i bought my first house, realised i liked streetskating.

A few years passed ( well 18 to be exact!!) before i saw an article in the Evening Standard on weekly street skates, what with the healthy angle they were writing about and the fun time described i thought i would give it ago, and so after a few free lessons with Skatefresh at Hyde Park i ventured on a night skate in my Quads, oh boy, did i not know how unfit i was! 3 miles in i'd fallen over 3 times and finally bowed out by the Lyceum Theatre. but i wasn't deterred, i went and got some inlines, had some lessons with Citiskate and finally ventured on a street skate in the following May, had a great time, great music good company and went home with a big smile, and have been going back for the last two years!

via other skaters i found out about the regular adult session in Camberley run by Mick & Jane and i have been a regular there and an occassional visitor to the Fleet session on Wednesday when it's too wet to skate outdoors.

I have made some good friends through skating, hopefully i'll meet some more.

Re:Introduce yourself! - 23:07 03 Oct 04 Hmmmm, I never like these things but lets give this a go

I started skating just over 5 years ago when I visited New York on my own. A truely fantastic place of which Central Park is amazing. This huge park with deer and nature in the middle of a great metropolis, I was facinated by it. I quicky realised that time was limited, I could have spent my entire trip in Central Park and never see the city. Everyone else was on blades in the park (yes that steriotype from the movies is actually true!) so I though I would give it a try. One trip to the local Mall and I had my new skates. Learning on my own in the park was pretty eventful but you will have to ask me about that story when you see me When back home I tried to keep it up and while I did go out on them quite a few times I just couldn't find anywhere to skate!

I moved to Camberley 3 years ago (I'm a Guildford boy born & raised) and since I am in a flat couldn't bring my bike with me, there is no place to put it as I don't have a garden. I discovered my skates again and found that there were better paths here

I must admit that my dedication was weigning in 2003, there is only so many times you can skate to and from your flat and if another white van shouts "wey hey skater git" I'm gonna loose it!! Then I found the London Skate...

I wasn't sure if I should go at first but then decided to bite the bullet. I was hooked AND I now had somewhere to skate I couldn't wait for the season to come around again this year. I got talking to Martin (Drakey) on the London Skate forums and he told me about Saturdays in Camberley..... The rest as they say is history!

Oh, and then I built this site

Dan
It must be Saturday night, listening to the "merry" people walking past my window. I quite like it in a strange way. I'm a city boy at heart - Twitter Status

Re:Introduce yourself! - 13:10 13 Oct 04 Are you really sure you want to know about us? Well if you're really sure.....

I'm a born again skater - i.e. I had a pair of woolies specials as a kid. A millenium or so later I got the idea I could take-up skating again ( I think it was the alcohol talking). Anyhoo, It's not as easy as I remembered. Maybe I just don't bounce so well these days.

Upshot is I've had a few lessons, fallen-over many times, and still want more - am I ill or just hooked - you decide!

Re:Introduce yourself! - 22:47 13 Nov 04 Hi, folks!

I met Red and Dogsbody today at Camberley Arena and I thought I'd say hi here too!

I've been skating for about 2 years since my wife bought me a pair of agressives for my 30th to combat an age crisis and I got hooked! Since then I've qualified as an IISA Instructor, done 2 marathons (Goodwood and LIM), done WNS and FNS, represented at Roller Disco and met loads of cool people along the way!

I moved from Cardiff to Frimley about a month ago and have been looking for an indoor venue to keep skating during the off-season. I found that, this forum and a growing skate community all in one day!!

Thanks for making me feel welcome today and I'm looking forward to joining in with the Surrey skating community, helping out on Saturdays and doing many events next season!

Oh, and sorry - I'm another Dan and I also do computers for a living!!

Dan.

Re:Introduce yourself! - 18:45 14 Nov 04 Ahh that might explain it! Hi Dan did you use to post on www.londonskaters.com?
It's just that your name seems familiar!

well hopefully i'll meet you either Wednesday or Saturday at the Arena, 'fraid i was working all this weekend so i never got to wear my skates!

I'll be easy to spot, just look for the oldest scuffed up FSKs in the hall.

Re:Introduce yourself! - 21:01 14 Nov 04 Used to post on LS.com and SR.com as "deusx" and changed to Dan Solo after I got sick of explaining what Deusx was and that it wasn't my real name!

Haven't been posting much recently as been a bit busy at work/moving house etc!
