The above look more like a free skate.

Larger wheels generally mean:
1. Less hassle on the flat / down hill.
2. Slightly harder work up hill
3. More tension on your lower back.

As a starting point, the 90 mm wheels may do you. Note that longer frames generally allow more push, so what you'd be getting (given 4 * 90) is more of a rec boot than a race boot, but again I wouldn't say this will cause you any difficulties.

Ref wrist guards, I agree - I hardly ever fall now, but I still wear them (actually powerslide glove type things rather than bona fide big wristguards) because you never know what some other idiot is going to do in front of you.

Note if you do go to Tatem, and want to race, you will need a helmet. Just in case that wasn't obvious above.

mmm, i saw the helmet part.

I always thought the wrist guards actually looked quite cool, but just don't like wearing them and getting clammy hands!

So, the frame would be 11.5 or so for my boot size. Would i not be able to add 100mm wheels to that frame at a later date?

Or would i need to replace the whole frame, and wheels!

Think i may ask vincent to order some in tonight.

The frame on the Alpha has 90mm printed along it, so I would be surprised if it took wheels larger than 90mm. You would be looking at changing the frame and wheels. If it has the Bont 3 point mounting, at the same spacing as used on their 100mm frames, then it won't be a problem but may be costly. Again you need to check this with Vincent. As you say, the larger boot comes with the longer frame, but I think 90mm will be the max wheel size. The shorter frame on the smaller size boot probably only has 84mm wheels. Vincent may be able to offer your size boot with a bigger frame and wheel size, but naturally the price will increase. As far as I know, only Bont manufacture frames for that 3-point mounting system.

Your Salomons are similar to my first Salomon skates. The boot was around in different forms up until they stopped production last year. Many of us are still skating on Salomon S-Lab with 76mm/80mm wheels, or the 3V-SL with 80mm wheels all round. The latter can be rockered for slalom. These variants have a power strap to pull the skate into the ankle. It replaces the top lace lock piece that you have on your Detonators. My first ones had carbon composite 255mm frames with a 72mm/76mm wheel combination.

Re:Taking up speed skating - 18:35 17 Apr 08 What MCS said - as usual he's on the nail. Get confirmation before you buy anything!

If you don't, don't expect to be able to fit other (larger) wheels.

(It's kind of obvious I guess )

Re:Taking up speed skating - 12:59 22 Apr 08 As you are already an experienced skater, you might want to go to something like a Bont Jet - it's lower cut that the semi, but gives you more forward flexion, which you'll want if you get serious - lateral support is exceptional and probably as supportive as a higher cuff. The Jet takes a 100mm wheel too - which helps with roll - you could fit 90mm wheels to start, but means you're not faced with an expensive upgrade in the near future. Recognising you're tight on funds at the moment, but spending a bit more initially means you won't be needing to upgrade in the near future. Obviously Checkersport is your only source in the UK, otherwise shipping from the US from Adamsinline or Danger Racing.
