Re:Introduce yourself! - 10:10 11 May 05 hey everyone
Well theres not alot really for me to say except that i used to go skating with my parents when i was alot younger but then we stopped going for some reason. Anyway i've been thinking for a while of starting up again now that i'm older i can just go out with my mates and stuff.
So i was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. I never got on well with blades so i'm thinking of getting some quad skates, but what would be the best design/make for a beginner for indoor arena use? I'm completely clueless on this And also what would be the best indoor arena to go to if i'm just starting out again. I mean i think it will all just come back to me but you never know.
Hope to here from you guys soon

Re:Introduce yourself! - 10:23 11 May 05 Hi Saz. I'm a quad skater (very new!) coz I didn't get on with inlines. I'm not the best person to ask about skates - I'll leave that to the better skaters here. Welcome! Je suis belle et ça ne demande aucun effort

Re:Introduce yourself! - 11:31 11 May 05 Hi Saz and welcome.

The question of which skates is not a simple one and people have spent many hours discussing it. There are however some general rules...

The big questions are really, how much will you use them and what sort of skating do you think you will be interested in, do you just want to go round indoors or go outdoors, quads or inlines are up to you and a personal choice.

It is relatively easy to pick skates it's just process of elimination. First I would just stick to the main manufacturers, you can't really go wrong with them and it's also easier to get spares etc. Steer well clear of Fisher Price & Argos!!

Generally speaking each company does a cheap, middle & expensive skate, how much you want to spend (relate this to how much you will use them) and the size if the frame & wheels. Short frame and small wheels is very agile (dance and slalom) but slow while a longer frame and bigger wheels is faster and more stable (good for street skating).

The only other thing that might be worth mentioning is that try looking at skate shops websites as well as the manufacturers, I say that as the manufacturers will only show this years models however the shops are still selling last years which are still just as good! e.g. My Salomon S-labs are £200 while last years Salomon CMax2 are practically an identical skate and currently being sold for £100 (ish). Don't feel you have to get the most expensive.

I will shut up now! But please don't be scared about asking on this forum any more questions even if it seems silly. You can get very deep into skates... bearings, wheel size & hardness etc. but there really isn't any need unless you want to. Don't spend a fortune until you find out what sort of skating you like (slalom, dance, street, park, etc.)

For indoor places to skate I can highly recommend Camberley Arena on Saturdays. There is a kids lesson from 8:30am to 9:30am, an open sesson from 9:30am till 11:30am and an adults session from 5:30pm till 6:30pm (and later sometimes). Mick and Jane run the Camberley sessions with Mick on inlines and Jane on Quads so whatever you pick you can be helped out. It is really friendly and they even have a few skates avaliable for rent if you want to try out inlines before you buy some.

Sorry I have written so much! Dan

Re:Introduce yourself! - 11:55 11 May 05 Well Red has an excuse as she takes a kid, what's yours??

Your right though, you don't have to be a kid to attend the morning sessions but lots of children do turn up

Well I still feel like a kid so I guees that' s OK. Besides most of the kids are better than me anyway - I aspire to be as good as them.

However Saz to clarify, the lessons are split into real beginners (Adults & Kids), intermediate kids, even better kids and the "Adult" group. Needless to say the adult group is of a wide skill level and the instructors will sub-divide the group if need be.

So come along and give it a try - you never know, you might put Merry & Me to shame

Red
