Sorry I just read it and jumped in the deep end, I'd be very happy to work with you if you like?

Re:Cskate asbox - 00:34 14 Mar 08 Lemming got the action to investigate an Asbox back on 3 Nov 2006 so I don't think your standing on his toes.

Do have a talk with Retry though as I believe he was having a look at this too though.

Re:Cskate asbox - 08:09 14 Mar 08 No way - go for it. At the time, I had time (sort of). Now I don't.

I do have a slightly electronics background and stuff though, so I'm happy to assist if needed.

Re:Cskate asbox - 08:58 14 Mar 08 I have contacted Stevie B and he has been very helpful, Oh and it does look like I was seeking a larger than needed Amp.

Hi Kevin, happy to help.

We went for a plywood construction on an old style alluminium rucksack with exterior frame. We did this as the ply is light and easy to work with and the frame is the best way of distributing the weight and making it comfertable to ride with.

It is good if the frame is flat as opposed to curved (makes mounting the box easier but its no biggy) and that it has the bit at the bottem campers put a sleeping bag on. Most of them have but some are a bit shallow. It makes standing them up easier and protects the box from bangs. A wiast belt is good too.
Try EBay, usualy under £20 or local second hand shops. We have 4 now including the one waiting to have ASBOX 4 fitted and the best one is the junior size. Its a bit shallower than the adult ones and a better fit on your average short arse skater. LOL But the adult sizes are fine. Most of them are adjustable in some way and you can always saw a bit off the top if its too big.

The actual sound is a matter of weight V power X Cost. The louder it is the bigger the bits and more importantly the more elecricity it wants, the bigger the battery. You have to keep the weight down or it is a pain to skate with. (ASBOXII point in question.) ASBOX I & II are around 30wts RMS (Thats the proper rating) or 200wts peak, thats the bullshit sales rating. We use 6" full range car speakers of the biggest rated wattage we could find on EBay. They were around £20. You can get better ones that will perform better, be more efficiant but our budget was a bit tight and we decided that if we blew them up or smashed them up £2o was easier to replace. But the better quality you get... well you get the picture... watch the weight though. Amps is the same story pretty much, I got one of ours for a tenner.. they say 200wt max but are probly doing 30wts. They have been rock solid though, are small and very light. I will look them up and post a link.

Batteries
Unless you can get a clever soul to build a big Nicad pack then its sealed lead acid, or sla. 12v. Safe as houses, easy charge and conect. The power in them is rated in Amp Hours. The more amp hours the bigger it is. We used 12 amp hours first which seemed to go forever then switched to 7 amp hours which do the skate and are a lot lighter. You could even get away with 4 ah and some one carry a spare. When you build your box make it bigenough to take 12s and then you can when you need too. We got ours from Maplins but if you can get a good brand, like Yusa thats better. Should be between £10 and £25 each.

Box
The box is just 6mm plywood and is realy in two bits. An oblong for the amp and battery and a sort of semi circle for the speakers. The front of the battery/amp box is in two peices. The top half screws on so you can remove it and get at the amp if you need to and the bottem bit is held on with a strap so you can accsess the battery for charging etc. The speaker bit is two sort of semi circles, a flat back and two panals in a wide V to fit the speakers. Size is dependant on the speakers you get. Put a bit of wadding in the space to stop it resonating too much. We attached our box to the frame by simply cable tieing it to the frame through holes in the box.
Try not to make it too wide at the bottem or too high, think of your arms, head and hips when your skating. Our base is about 25 cm wide and 10 cm deep by maybee 30 cm high but get the amp and speakers before you desing it. We built a couple of models in cardboard.

That should get you going......feel free to ask more questions.....

Cheers

Re:Cskate asbox - 15:33 14 Mar 08 Update:
IPods are more than loud enough, remember you can always turn it down. Set the input gain on the amp to 3/4s and control the volume form the player…. The receivers for the radio link are £188 each….

These are the amps and speakers we have. Cheap and cheerful but they do the job.

Like I said you can buy better but hey, its an ASBOX.

Hmmm the amp is a 400w.
Anyway good news, I have won the amp on ebay, no one else bidded.

It may end up too heavy and so we might need to find another but it does mean we have a start, once I find some speakers I can start playing arond with it and then it's just a matter of mounting it.

Oh thanks for the offer of reimbursement but It's about time I gave you something anyway so no worries, although if you want the radio link later then that will cost you.

Re:Cskate asbox - 21:00 14 Mar 08 I think I might have an old ally framed rucksak knocking about somewhere if it's of any use.
BTW, not being facetious but what'll it be used for? To compliment the London set-ups or as a stand alone for cskate?

Re:Cskate asbox - 21:57 14 Mar 08 Don't ask me.
Actually I think you have answered it yourself, There won't be any music device built in but it will have a small standard jack plug that will fit into an MP3 player or an mp3 phone etc, the london setups use some small receivers that if we had one will also fit and then it would play the same as all the others. It has also been asked if we can fit a microphone to it for use as a PA.
It will likely be finsihed in a nice shade of orange and so even if it joins a london skate it should be a little bit of promoting for Cskate.

Yes please I'll certainly take your rucksack, If we can get Merry's speakers in there I could collect it all in one go. I just don't know when

If anyone works or comutes anywhere near Molesey, please shout...

Re:Cskate asbox - 13:11 15 Mar 08 I have 2 old 6 X 9 car speakers which still work as far as I am aware. I never got round to fitting them and got to the stage where I was just going to chuck them out. Would they be any use as well as Merry's?

Re:Cskate asbox - 14:04 15 Mar 08 Yes please Chez, 6x9's are perfectly sized.
I'll have to play around with the speakers due to wattage ratings and impedance and at present I'm not sure what will work best so the more the better.
Bit wobbly has a rucksack and I am also tracking another on Ebay, the second asbox might be sooner than we think.

"IF" I can get to Sandhurst on Tuesday, would all you loverly people be able to bring your bits and bobs down? Otherwise it will be a while before I can get over your way again as I am going to China the following week.
