Beginners guide to Bearings - 14:06 23 Jan 09 This thread discusses the Content article: Beginners guide to Bearings

Hi All,
Maybe this will come in useful for someone sometime. I recently discovered that when cleaning bearings (Bones Redz in this case) you can get the situation where some (or all) of the ball bearings fall out of the middle race track onto the floor or somewhere equally inconvenient.
Once you collect them all together again you can actually get them back into the race track as follows:

1) Get a folded towel and place it on your work surface

2) Arrange your (7) ball bearings in a cresent moon shape inside the outer bearing casing (ie all the ball bearings are arranged on one side of the casing).

3) Gently push down on the outer bearing casing (aproximately in the middle of the cresent moon of ball bearings). This should more or less allow the ball bearings to get into position in the outer race track.

4) Gently push in the inner bearing casing, starting on the opposite side of the cresent moon of ball bearings. The idea is to glide the inner casing into the central position.

5) If you succeed with this you now have the ball bearings in the correct place aligned on one side of the race track. You can now reassemble the rest of the bearing and lubricate with your preferred oil / grease.

The key here is that the soft towel can hold the bearings in place while you reassemble the bearing properly.

So - get to it....you can now restore any "broken" bearings you have

Hah! In a word.....no Wouldn't that be nice though - you just drop your skates off and pick them up with shiny clean, rattle free bearings! We can but dream....
Have decided that cleaning bearings is something you have to do at least once, but not often!!!

Re:Beginners guide to Bearings - 20:47 15 Mar 09 Rog,

Thank you for giving me hope that I could actually get these @#$%&^*!!! bearings back together. http://www.cskate.co.uk/components/com_joomlaboard/emoticons/pinch.gif

It worked but only when I used a thicker towel.

Thanks !

Re:Beginners guide to Bearings - 09:31 16 Mar 09 Hi Old Kid,
That's great - glad the info helped you out. I really didn't believe it was possible to get bearings back in the casing like this until I tried it!

Re:Beginners guide to Bearings - 12:23 16 Mar 09 I will now say that I do not like the design of Redz Bearings. The plastic bearing holder just makes way too much drag/resistance on the bearing surface. For years I used the German 2 piece bearings and loved them for roll out. I am looking to get something that lets and old guy roll easier. At my age I need all the help I can get to keep up with my daughter.

Thanks for offering a well laid out and very helpful site !
You guys are terrific !
