Goodwood Video 2008 - 01:07 14 Mar 09 Rog has done a sterling job to edit down all the video footage we had from Goodwood 2008 into a video we can put on our website.

The brief was...
- To remind the people that came in 2008 what a great day it was
- To show people that have never done Goodwood what they are missing

Here is what Rog has come up with

I don't particularly what to invite criticism however if anyone does have any suggestions then now is definitely the best time to raise them!!!

Rog, I know you had problems finding music and I know you were trying hard to find royalty free music which is even harder but I do think we need something a bit more... upbeat for the music even if it does means illegally using some music.

What do others think??

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 13:45 14 Mar 09 Nice one Rog.

I love the edit.

I don't have a problem with the music.
----- I think that as royalty free stuff goes it fits well with the scenes. Naturally it's just keyboard music as royalty free mostly is.

But I do have a major problem with the format (aspect ratio).
----- It appears to be mostly 16:9 format shown at 4:3 (12:9) aspect. To skate at Goodwood you obviously need to be unnaturally tall and thin (1min 12sec and many other scenes), and use elliptical wheels (0min 17sec). And my goodness how narrow those quads are (0min 38sec)! Is this some sort of problem uploading, or has it lost it's format ID somewhere? 16:9 needs to be seen at 16:9. 4:3 needs to be adjusted if mixed in with 16:9 by having a left and right black or coloured band, or enlarging proportionately and cropping the top and bottom, or pan and scanning. Else crop the 16:9 to 4:3 on the sides and show it all as 4:3.

Maybe the slo-mo could do with a little fade up caption "slo-mo" just so that the people not used to seeing speed skaters don't think it's normal speed.

I still think it requires "Mick and the ice cream" even if it is from the previous year.

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 18:10 14 Mar 09 Thx all for the comments - sounds like we have a few ideas and things to work on
If anyone feels like finding any other music that we can use royalty free then please post anything you think is relevant - I can easily change the soundtracks around a bit.
Did you like the little quiet bit at the end where the skater walks across with his boots? I liked that!

The aspect ratio things are a little trickier to fix, but can be done if required. Certainly reducing all the video down to PAL 720x576 (especially the hi def stuff) will have some effects on aspect ratio. I had to cut various bits off some of the video anyway, so some of the aspect ratio things probably crept in there.....

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 21:29 14 Mar 09 Yup, you are on to a thankless task there as I found out when I did the 2007 vid!

OK, I have worked out what has happened with aspect ratio, we probably could have gotten away with it once (well MCS would have still spotted it) but the vid from HUTC was given to us in the wrong aspect ratio, it was a 16x9 vid shown in a 4:3 ratio. When Rog then tried to cut off the HUTC advert he effectively turned it into 16x9 which then was displayed as 4:3 again in the final vid. In short, it was squashed twice!

I have some video manipulation commands here and will try and fix the vids we have to make them all the same format, resolution and ratio.

One little thing that was bugging me, can we drop the caption altogether? There are only two and the second one talks about "road" which isn't really right (don't want people confusing it for a street skate).

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 21:59 14 Mar 09 Wow fantastic! This is really good

Only one small comment...no mention of the website address would be good to just add it to the end credits
I\'ll NEVER post on the forums

Gahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Now I am lost in the world of DAR (display aspect ratio) and PAR (pixel aspect ratio), and how they relate to frame size. In short, DAR is the 4:3, 16:9, etc. ratio that is usually called just "aspect ratio", while PAR describes the shape of the pixels themselves. I am pretty sure this is all that is wrong with the original video :-/

I am really sorry but I am going to have to give up on this! I REALLY want to open registration this week and still have a pile of things to do to do it

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 11:48 16 Mar 09 OK. Here's a plan.

As most the video is in the wrong proportions, would it be possible to signature it all as 16:9. We would probably get away with this as most of it would be correct (I think). The then stretched 4:3 material is more likely to be acceptable as it's the minority of the video, and a lot of people seem to be used to watching 4:3 in 16:9 format on their TVs. Can we try this as the easy option and see what it looks like?

Re:Goodwood Video 2008 - 13:41 16 Mar 09 Hi MCS,
Well - that's not a bad idea...I'll see if I can set the video format for the final render stage to 16:9. That may improve the majority of the aspect ratio issues you have raised.
I'll give it a go and resend it to DB later. Then you can all review it again
Actually, I'm hoping that will help a lot because if I have to cut the video from a different aspect ratio source video I basically have to regenerate all my clips again. Not a problem as such, but it will be a time issue....lets see how this works....
