Re:Bearing Cleaning - 13:34 07 Jan 05 I got one of the Utrasonic cleaners of eBay and they seem to work on bearings that aren't too grubby to begin with. if however you mess them up like i usually do you still have to clean them up with a toothbrush before hand... and then use a good quality citrus cleaner as well.

Re:Bearing Cleaning - 14:41 07 Jan 05 Now that I have my new skates my bearings really seem to be getting dirty in no time at all so I will definately be on the lookout for one of these now! Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing

Re:Bearing Cleaning - 14:46 10 Jan 05 If you're using good quality bearings, ie Powell & Peralta (Bones) etc., then
you can simply treat them as you would any other mechanical component:

  1. Place the bearings, usually four at a time, in a jar with a generous amount of petrol

  2. Seal tightly and agitate thoroughly

  3. Remove bearings from jar and clean individually with a toothbrush

  4. Carefully inspect the bearings and remove any built up crud from inside the bearing race

  5. Dispose of the petrol (and the muck) in an environmentally sensitive manner

  6. Clean the jar, add more petrol and agitate again

  7. If there is still muck in the petrol repeat 1 - 5

  8. Dry the bearings, ideally with compressed air, or with a lint free cloth (paper towels tend to leave fibres behind) but make sure they are really dry or step 9. is a waste of time as the petrol will render the grease ineffective

  9. Carefully apply a high quality grease (not oil) or specialist product such as Powell & Peralta Speed Creme to each side of the bearing race and ensure that it is evenly worked through all the bearing cages

  10. Wipe off any excess material

  11. Reassemble and enjoy quiet and smooth running bearings...

I do this every six months or so, depending on how much skating I'm doing, and my Bones bearings have been spinning smoothly and quickly for over five years!

I remain unconvinced that Ultrasonic Cleaners and Citrus Degreaser are any sustitute for Petrol and Attention To Detail

Re:Bearing Cleaning - 20:09 10 Jan 05 Hey Dr. Shred, welcome to the site, I was waiting for you to visit

Thanks for your advice although it still seems like a pain in the backside I am going to try both ways and see the difference. Perhaps I will do one skates bearings one way and another the other

Oh and good luck with the new job

Re:Bearing Cleaning - 09:19 11 Jan 05 Thank you for your welcome and your good wishes. I will give you a call and catch up about work stuff in the next few weeks...

Back to the issue at hand though.

One thing I did not emphasise strongly enough are the mechanical qualities of your componenets.
    Two things are key here:
  1. The bearings must be of high quality. With almost fifteen years of blading, most of it in the Bladers Paradise (Canberra, Australia), behind me I can confidently state that it's worth spending the money on these critical items. Correctly maintained they will give you years of excellent performance and are worth the investment

  2. [li]A combination of high quality steel axles and machined alloy hub inserts delivering a flex free system which helps by ensuring the load is correctly transmitted to the bearing surface, thus making sure the bearings are best able to do their job

Once you've made the investment in the right gear, remember to maintain it regularly - especially if you blade in less than ideal condiditons (the usual case in the gloriously sunny country *cough*).
