The Cambox/Asbox thread - 14:09 13 Aug 09 ambientvoid wrote:
iv seen the setup u guys use for the freewheel/skyride on previous years, thats way too complicated and more importantly (for me) expensive. i need the basics, something i can mount in a 'boom tube' using battery powered car speakers or similar, i suspect its more complicated than that tho so anyone who can give me pointers would be great. Our Asbox (names the Cambox is really really simple and consists of...

Rucksack frame - something big and sturdy.

2 car speakers - these can be heavy (along with the battery) so decide if you are going to make the box small and light or big, heavy and loud. We were donated some lovely 6x9 speakers which are loud but heavy.

Car amplifier - We used a Kenwood KAC-5203 as it's small, light and matched the Wattage of our speakers perfectly!

Battery - We started out with an old motorbike battery but now use a bog standard 7AH 12V Lead acid battery.

Woodwork - This is the hardest part and way harder than the electronics, use the wood to mount the above parts onto the rucksack frame

This is really just a start guide to ask more questions so anyone can ask what they want to know....

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 14:57 13 Aug 09 i was hoping to overcome the weight problem by making something compact enough that i can mount it on the rear of my board using extra long truck screws. originally i was thinking of using a trailer of some kind but that'll be difficult to tow on my board, however i have about a foot of excess foot space on my board that i could mount something on temporarily.
iv seen a few examples of BIG 'boom tubes' around but iv never heard any smaller ones of about 2ft long in use, i figure thats the biggest i can go if i mount it lengthways to hang off the end of the board. Any thoughts and suggestions would be great, but i figure the cambox design should be easily transferable to my idea...

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 14:05 14 Aug 09 Ok so iv drawn up a preliminary list of what I should need: a heavy duty postal tube, 2x 13cm round speakers, a 12v sla battery and a 250-300w amp. If anyone knows anywhere other than ebay I could get this stuff please say so.

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 18:44 14 Aug 09 How about the cardboard tube that comes in rolls of carpet?
Nice and thick/strong.
If you ask nicely at carpet shops they usually let you have some.

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 00:16 15 Aug 09 Get cheap and cheerful to begin with, beg borrow and steal. Freecycle can be good. Once you have a setup that works then spend money on the weakest link each time to make it better, this is what we did.

a 250-300w ampIgnore max power (and most other) wattages, they are pointless. Look at the RMS wattage for speakers and amps. We originally got a "400W" amp off ebay for a couple of quid. A bit of digging when it it turned up showed it was actually 8W RMS! We now run a "300W" amp but it's 55W RMS and A LOT louder.

We got lucky but running speakers and an amp that are matched really helps. You can worry about that later. We ended up with 60W RMS speakers and an 55W RMS amp. As you can imagine it's pointless having a huge amp and small speakers or vice versa.

found this on ebay, not much info. does anyone think they'd be up to the task of running a couple of 5 or 6" speakers?

oh and how does one go about getting an mp3 player to work with an amp?

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 21:28 15 Jul 10 Last years backpack was successful but REALLY heavy so this year iv taken it apart and stripped it of unnecessary weight, then reassembled it on the rear of my 5ft longboard in time for next weekends Southampton Skyride. It worked on its static test but iv yet to test it on the move.

What id like to know is were the Camboxes fitted with waterproofing for the exposed electronic wiring and contacts? Would clingfilm wrap work or would the exposed bits get hot enough to melt it?

Re:The Cambox/Asbox thread - 15:14 19 Jul 10 Our cambox isn't really waterproof and so all wiring is exposed :-p

Can't wait to see this next week!
