does anyone know a way to find out if its open before going down there?
We pay an annual licence fee to the MoD to use Eelmoor for driving lessons to under 17s. This allows us exclusive use of the circuit on a number of dates throughout the year. The dates when we are using it up until July 2011 are all posted at www.driveat15.com/dates.asp
Just to clarify, on these dates we DO have the right to close the track to public access. In fact our licence specifically states that we must, to reduce the risk of injury to the public while learner drivers are on the track.
So if you check the website above then you can find out the dates when we are teaching on the driver training track and avoid travelling down on those dates.
The MoD does use the track itself for variou exercise and it is also used for other activities from time to time - e.g. parking for Farnborough Airshow in July, Tempest Rally in October or November, various car sprint races, athletics events, etc. I'm afraid I have no idea where you can find the dates for those activities, but at least you can avoid a wasted trip when we are using the track by checking our online calendar www.driveat15.com/dates.asp
