Wet weather skating - 14:43 08 Sep 10 so I understand that the subject of this thread is possible.. there are websites willing to sell me "waterproof bearings" is there anything I should be aware of purchasing them? (also how should I change my technique to do this and on a scale of one to jumping off the Eiffel tower with roller blades on how suicidal is this?

Re:Wet weather skating - 15:40 08 Sep 10 I have been skating in the wet. Surprisingly I found that the wetter the surface the bettre the grip. It seems to be most slippery when slightly damp - as I discovered last night. I certainly could not push to hard

I also switched to softer wheels in the winter to give a bit more grip, but again it is the damp conditions that seemed most slippery

Bearings - just slap a bit of grease over them and replace when knackered. They are pretty cheap toreplace

Re:Wet weather skating - 16:53 08 Sep 10 You can get "water resistant" bearings but all it really means is that the seal is tighter which means they don't spin as well. You may as well just keep an old set as your wet ones and make sure you take them out and dry them after you have skated in the wet. Still grinning from an awesome @LondonSkate last night :-D Such a party atmosphere - Twitter Status

Re:Wet weather skating - 19:24 08 Sep 10 Tom, the bearings that your skates came with will almost certainly be fine for wet weather, but make sure when you get in again that you dry them out. They're porbably only half shielded, so when you take them out of the weel, there be a weird plastic thing on the inside holding the bearings in place. While you should clear them out and wap a load of GT85 over them (the quick way) ideally you should dry them out, then re-oil. If you are putting bearings that you think might be a bit damp back in, you should ensure you do this when it's dry, then go out for 20 minutes - this will clear them out and prolong life.
The other consideration, of course, is how often do you want to switch bearings in your skate wheels. You could argue, buy waterproof bearing and wet weather wheels, then use them as a set for the wet. Personally, I don't skate in teh wet if I can help it, so I just have the one setup.

Peter's suggestion of greasing them to prevent water getting in will be OK for a while, but I wouldn't want to risk it longer term.

Wheels will make a huge difference in the wet, and there are wet weather wheels around that would give you good grip.

Technique wise, as Peter said, it's hard to get good traction, so don't try to push as hard or it will be like skating on bad ice-skates. Double-push technique is supposed to be good for wet weather, but it's also very hard to learn.

From my experience, the wet ground isn't an issue - I skated in pouring rain in Sardinia and still had grip - but in the UK, there's a lot more oil around and I think (personally) that this is what's creating the slipper surface that we all hate.

Re:Wet weather skating - 16:35 11 Sep 10 There are always ceramic bearings.

You can also get quite cheaply, bearings with ceramic balls and stainless races. I have used some of these imported from the USA, but not in the rain.

In either case, you would need to dry and relube them after rain, as the lube and water will create a sludge which will not function well as a lubricant.

Some bearings are labyrinth shaped around the seals to keep the dirt out, and I presume this would also make rain less likely to get past the seal.

Oooo. Were these stainless, rather than the carbon steel races?
