Slalom Info - 11:40 10 Feb 05 I have been doing a lot of research regarding slalom and doing it properly so I thought I would do a post on it....

Area
You will need a big enough area to work in with enough space around them for what you are doing. If you are just practicing then you can do this with two cups on a tiled floor at home otherwise you will need a much bigger area with space for people to get around you.

Setup
The official setup is a run of 20 cones with spacings of either 50cm, 80cm or 120cm. If there is more than one run then they should be spaced more than 2m appart.

Cups/Cones
The size of the cone is usually about 8cm wide, 8-10cm high. They may be cones or cups. What you want is something solid and heavy that won't break of you land on them and won't blow away in the wind. Ikea do good cups although they have recently changed you can see their current type HERE. The other favorite are the "swiss cones" that you can see HERE.

Styles
Speed - How fast can you get through a row of cups in certain positions (one footed, one wheeled, backwards, etc.)
Freestyle - How artistically you can traverse a line of cones

Re:Slalom Info - 13:45 10 Feb 05 I'm not sure where the article is, but i remember that there is a restriction on the size of the cones, which is why they aren't normally larger than the Ikea Cups commonly used in competitions as they match the swiss cones quite closely in diameter.

Re:Slalom Info - 15:00 10 Feb 05 I have been trying to find spec's for the cones themselves but couldn't find anything so yes please share if you know of anything.

I did however go to B&Q at lunch time to buy a 30m tape measure that I will now procede to mark up at 50, 80 & 120cm divisions!

Re:Slalom Info - 20:34 10 Feb 05 Did you see what happened at Ikea today!?

I'm still trying to decide which of the two cones (Ikea or Swiss) to go for but before I do get some I'll see if anyone else whats some.

Re:Slalom Info - 22:38 10 Feb 05 just found the page, it's on the rules for Freestyle Slalom on www.universkate.com.

cones should approx 80mm in diameter and 80mm to 100mm high, though they accept lower cones judging by the swiss cones.

oh, Lemming, if you're ordering any i'll come in with you for 40 cones

you need 60 cups/cones for a competition, 20 of each spacing 2 metres apart.

Re:Slalom Info - 02:32 11 Feb 05 Nice one Drakey, I'll update the post at the top.

Well, I do like the look of the swiss cones but doing the math they are expensive! 10 cones = 15.80 EUR = 10.89 GBP
10.89 GBP + 17.5% VAT + Shipping + Import Tax =~ 15.00 GBP

40 x Swiss cones =~ 60.00 GBP
40 x Ikea cups = 6.00 GBP

I think I may go with the Ikea cups!
