Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 00:38 06 Jan 10 I've been thinking about this for a while and following on from our successful January 2nd street skate (which I think only happened cos I SMS'd you all) I'm thinking of implementing it. I'd be interested to know what people think of the idea before I look into it further

How it would work
We would text "cskate on" to 0778620XXXX from our phones to be added to the list.

If anyone wants to go for a street skate they can text "cskate streetskate at 1pm from the arena" to 0778620XXXX and the message would be re-sent out to all the phones subscribed.

Users could unsubscribe at any time just by texting "cskate off".

Only phones subscribed would be able to send messages to the group.

This would NOT be a premium rate SMS, all messages would be at the standard rate.

The maximum I can see this being used is 200 messages (sent) per month which would cost £10 per month is SMS fees. I am willing to front this although if it's a success and/or people agree perhaps the Cskate Association could fund it?

Just an idea really that has been in my brain for a few years and wanted to throw it out there.

I have kept details bare so please ask any questions.

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 10:43 06 Jan 10 In principle I think it's a fab idea, and in my opinion YES Cskate Association should pay for it.

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 16:41 06 Jan 10 While I'm unlikely to use it, I have to wonder why you'd pay for it yourselfand even ASK if cskate should pay... Of course cskate should pay. You certainly shouldn't. sheesh... ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 22:37 06 Jan 10 Sounds like a good idea to me, although I don't at this point fully understand how the charges work.

Presumably the charge to Cskate relates to the messages sent out to the subscribers. Is there also a weekly/monthly/annual charge for the service?

I see no reason you should finance this DB. Seems we need a CSkate meeting with a view to discussing and accepting this as a chargeable commitment. At this stage I favour it in principal.

Incidentally, I didn't spot your SMS until after I posted regarding the 2nd Jan skate, but I did appreciate the message anyway.

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 01:34 07 Jan 10 Presumably the charge to Cskate relates to the messages sent out to the subscribers. Is there also a weekly/monthly/annual charge for the service?Correct. We would only pay for the messages sent albeit that would be multiplied by the number of people subscribed but we can bulk buy 200 messages for £9.80 (4.9p each). There would no weekly/monthly/annual charge at all for the service and any messages we bulk buy would never expire.

<techie talk - ignore if you like>
There are two ways I can do this:

1) Use an SMS gateway provider which forwards any SMS's to a script on this website. The script does all the cleaver stuff and sends the appropriate responses back. This is is the the basis for the costings above and what I am currently programming up for fun.

2) Another option would be to deal with the SMS part myself too, I already have a mobile phone permanently attached to one of my servers and for £10 per month I can buy a contract SIM that would give it unlimited SMS! The trouble with this is that it's a lot slower and has been flaky in the past.
</end of techie talk>

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 17:41 07 Jan 10 Tough, it's written using option 1 which I actually think will be a lot cheaper too.

So who wants to help me beta test this thing?

Just send "cskate on" to 07786200350 and you should get a message back to say you are signed up.

Re:Camberley Street Skate SMS alerts? - 11:21 08 Jan 10 Option 1 seemed to me to be the simplest anyway, but I take Lemming' s point about giving us a choice.
