Re:Goodwood Meeting Minutes 23 Oct 2010 - 22:25 14 Nov 10 Hi Everyone
Sorry could not make the meeting.
A few comments if I may:
Well done Barry for all the coordination involving the water stop we were sorry you could not make the day. (Mrs A as well as the rest of us missed you).
Mrs A has instructed me to offer our services again on the waterstop (if required).
Surely faster more experienced skaters have the obligation to avoid slower or less experienced skaters, wasnt this part of the pre event briefing 2 years ago? This is after all a fun event open to all including children (most of them skate better than me, no make that all of them) and adds to an almost carnival like atmosphere.
Truly an excellent event, Superbly organised (as usual) and may I add that whoever organised the weather did a wonderful job.
Best Regards to all
David, Guillian, Maxine

Re:Goodwood Meeting Minutes 23 Oct 2010 - 07:19 15 Nov 10 Yes, the onus should be on the faster skaters to avoid slower skaters who they're going to pass. Some of the ideas Dan's come up with are good (for example, you're not allowed to use headphones at all at LIM). I didn't race this year, but the year before the issue I had was not that there are slower skaters on the track, but that there were a few occasions where there was a line of skaters across the track, leaving no way through. I can't see a way around this as people won't always notice this situation, so I think we're just going to have to live with it. As David points out, this is NOT a speed skating race but a family event. ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Goodwood Meeting Minutes 23 Oct 2010 - 08:28 15 Nov 10 "you're not allowed to use headphones at all at LIM" - that's a much narrower track and is a race as oppposed to a charity and fun event. I think it is important to make the faster skaters realize that.

I was only aware of one situation where a speedskater was abusive to slower skaters and was subsequently hauled over the coals by other speed skaters.

Reading the minutes, it seems to me that the amount of organisational work seems to increase exponentially with the increase in entrant numbers. Have you thought about a cap on the numbers of entrants?

There are many sides to this but think the key one now that we are so big is that it becoming a lot harder for the experienced skaters to avoid the less experienced skaters. The fastest skater does a lap in 6 mins and this year the start line took 4mins to empty.

This was and has been discussed by us at great length and unfortunately there is no quick fix at all that we can see, it's just a matter of damage limitation now. All ideas are welcome.

Re:Goodwood Meeting Minutes 23 Oct 2010 - 07:25 17 Nov 10 I can't see an answer. For me, people just need to be aware of whether they've managed to block the whole track. It doesn't really matter where the gap is, as long as there is one. Maybe something as simple as 'don't skate within 2 metres of the side of the track is enough, then we can scoot around the outside? Otherwise you need something like a chalk line to show the 'speedy' route and slower skaters have to avoid it. Trouble is, that's a lot of chalk, and if it rains, it's useless.

I agree that the faster skaters have an obligation to be wary of the slower ones, but equally I think the slower skaters need to be aware when they've managed to block the whole track. (Note I didn't skate this year, and I only had this issue once in 2009.)
