Re:Important: Cskate v2.0 - 21:14 28 Nov 11My view FWLIW is the shorter name the better . . . cs. com or cs8. com etc - less to type, saves wear on my fingers
However I realise that the full camberleyskaters.whatever is logical and easy for newcomers to grasp - I think the focus should be on attracting new people and making it as simple as possible for them to find and participate in the site.
In the new site would it be possible for people to embed pics within a post, that could open up new possibilities?
Lots of people are familiar with .com and .co.uk, however personally I'm not that bothered, .whatever is good . . .
Also, I don't facebook or twitter etc, so if you move in that direction I wont be able to participate (this may be a good thing dependant on your pov!!).

Re:Important: Cskate v2.0 - 00:42 29 Nov 11I think the focus should be on attracting new people and making it as simple as possible for them to find and participate in the site.I TOTALLY agree and something that this site currently does not do!
In the new site would it be possible for people to embed pics within a post, that could open up new possibilities?Thank you, this is exactly the sort of info I need. The forum is pretty much the most essential part of this site and the one I want to get right. There is so so much forum software out there and this sort of feedback helps choose.
Also, I don't facebook or twitter etc, so if you move in that direction I wont be able to participate.Yeah, A lot of us use these social sites as well as a number of skaters that have email but don't use any website such as cskate. It's one of the hardest parts of designing the replacement. It must have social "integration" so that pictures, videos and links posted on other sites can be embedded into this site as well as having outbound tagging so others can post content on here into those sites too.
I still like the idea of a news / blog / calendar driven pages that can be posted to a mailing list too for all the people that don't come to this site.
My view FWLIW is the shorter name the better . . . cs. com or cs8. com etc - less to type, saves wear on my fingers Do people still type URL's!?
Thank you for this and to all of you

Re:Important: Cskate v2.0 - 00:38 12 Feb 12This is another post as a reminder to myself in a place where I will find it again...
Outside of the forums this site needs to answer two questions... - Where can I skate next? - A list of places to skate with a map. - When can I skate next? - The calendar showing upcoming events. Users should be able to submit their own entries for these as well as submit modifications to out of data info (with moderation).

Dan, I know allot of the people who skate outdoors use apps like endomondo to track them, do you know of a way to amalgamate many maps? It's just a thought but if everyone spent a month using these apps and just skating on good roads, then we put all the data onto one mega map, what you'd have highlighted are all the roads and places that are good to skate on in a fairly sizeable area. I don't know of an easy way of doing this but I was wondering if maybe you'd come accross a service similar to it?
(sorry this is so scatter brained, I'll try to re write it so it makes sense when I have more time later)

Re:Important: Cskate v2.0 - 18:11 13 Feb 12with all the services like Endomondo, you can 'export' gpx files, so if you track your skate and think "oh.. that was a nice smooth road" it would be possible to add it to a google map set up specially for the purpose
Dan - you know alot about Google products, do you know if it's easy/possible to set up a shared google map? If you don't know, I might have a little look
... and of course if we had a database/repository of GPX files, it would be possible for people to download them and use them in apps like ViewRanger (which is extremely cool by the way)

Check out an open map I created ages ago at http://g.co/maps/b3xef Any of you can go in and edit that map now. What you will quickly find though is that it's a horrible way of storing the data. You end up with a very pretty page but that won't help you design a route for a skate.
I still have a physical map that I have used hi-ligher pen on to categorise all the roads in Camberley as well as alleyways and cut troughs. Whilst skating all the roads and finding the back streets was very useful, the map is completely useless to me. I tend to think that it would be the same for the rest of you and you are better off exploring on your own at your own levels. I would hate to mark a main road as being lovely and smooth only for a newbie skater to go out on it that can't stop and end up under a car.
What I think would be useful is a place too catalogue and categorise known routes so that others can look at them all to then go and create their own. I don't know of an easy way to do this now but I'll certainly keep an eye open. Thank you A great talk from @davecarroll at #DigitalSurrey tonight. Re:Important: Cskate v2.0 - 00:07 14 Feb 12Oohh, I like that! - I've added one.... is Eelmore too far from Camberley to be included?
Edit: DB, at the Winter Session tomorrow, remind me to chat to you about cataloguing routes... I've seen some cycling sites that do it and have a few thoughts, easier to chat than put it all down here though...
