Roller skating - 20:56 16 Apr 11 Hi!
I used to do roller skating younger but I stopped it and I would like to start again. I was wondering whether roller skating (I mean with two raws of two wheels, you know the old school roller skates) on roads is alright or are those roller skates only made for dancing in special disco clubs and stuff ? I would like to go from places to places by roller skating in the streets and on the tarmack thus I was looking for some advices about what brand/kind of roller skates I shall go for?
Also I m from Reading, any advices about shops and gd places to ride in this area are welcome!

Cheers

Re:Roller skating - 00:00 17 Apr 11 Hi julia

The skates you described are commonly referred to as quads. The other type are inlines. You can skate on the roads with boths kinds although inlines are faster.

There are lots of different brands and variations to go for. I'm not going to mention my choice because someone else will only argue it as every skater is passionate about there own choice and money is a factor for some. I'll let someone else advices on brands.

I will advice though if you are going to be skating outside on the roads on inlines you will need hardish wheels 83A or above. The skate is 70A to 100A.
Anything softer than 83A and the road will tear them apart.

Re:Roller skating - 01:29 17 Apr 11 Thank you I will be let some quads this week (wheels 82A is that alright? I don t know what is softer or stronger ) I will try it asap! look forward trying it so much! I will let you know how it goes!
By the way is it allowed to ride on roads like bikes or am I supposed to stay on sidewalks? Will I be considered as a driver, rider, or pedestrian?

Have a nice weekend!

Re:Roller skating - 13:15 17 Apr 11 Sorry, 70A is the softest end of the scale and 100A is the hardest.

I would skate on the pavement (sidewalk) if you're in a busy town unless you are doing the London Skate of course in which case you skate on the roads with everyone else. Cycle lanes are good if there are any.

Re:Roller skating - 17:35 17 Apr 11 Hi Julia,

Modernsavage is quite right, you can skate outside on either quads or inlines. Most people would recommend inlines because they are faster (less effort) and better over rough surfaces. Having said that, there are plenty of folk who skate outside on quads.

My advice is to come along to the Skate JaM session at Camberley Arena on Saturday at 5pm and introduce yourself to Jane and Michael.... they run it and will tell you who some of the other regular crowd are, everyone if very friendly and you will get more than enough advice also, you can hire skates so you can try inlines to see if you like them.

I don't think it's running next Saturday, to save you searching around the site for information..... here is an article on the Arena and here is a thread discussing it!

Have fun

Re:Roller skating - 17:56 17 Apr 11 Great advice about wheel hardness from Modern Savage. I skated on new inliners for the first time on Tuesday evening, outdoors. Never thought, beforehand, to look at the hardness rating printed on the wheels. After only one mile the wheels were ruined, completely ripped apart with small stones embedded in them. They were 78A hardness, great for indoors, but useless outdoors.

Re:Roller skating - 19:47 17 Apr 11 Thank you all!
Unfortunately on Saturday is defo not possible for me as I do boxing three/four times a week, and my main sessions are on weekends. If I can come over at some point I will, it will be very interesting indeed!
I will see whether 82Awheels are alright for outdoors. I can't do any indoor anyway, I m afraid there's no skateparks or gd places to ride in Reading area...but maybe I m wrong?

Have a nice sunday!

Re:Roller skating - 20:01 17 Apr 11 Welcome to the site Julia!

As someone who has made the switch from inlines to quads it seems that most quad skaters prefer softer wheels outside (whereas its the opposite with inlines) so the softer the better!

Some good sites that will help you and give good advice taylored to quads are:
www.everglides.co.uk
www.amazingskates.co.uk

I have skated outside on my quads, but wouldn't want to do any distance in them as its harder work than on my inlines. I used a set of Sugar wheels, whch are hybrids so OK to do either inside or outside. If you are just skating on a smooth surface you should be OK on whatever your skates came with until you get to know what you want.

Hope this helps

Re:Roller skating - 22:17 17 Apr 11 Hi Julia and welcome to the site. As you can see we are a friendly bunch here

If you can't make it along toe the Camberley Arena on Saturdays then you may want to look at going on the Sunday Stroll in London on Sundays.

you are also local so while I would wait until you are happy skating on the roads, you are welcome to join us on the occasional street skate around Camberley
A great talk from @davecarroll at #DigitalSurrey tonight. He's the writer of the United Breaks Guitars song and a great talker - Twitter Status
