Re:Long Distance Skating? - 11:42 04 Aug 11
Everone has their own remedies, and it's worth giving them all a try. I've found that the secret is not to allow a blister to form in the first place. There comes a point when you become aware of the discomfort; that's the time to stop, before the blister really forms. Within a couple of days, the skin around the affected area starts to harden, then you can skate again and repeat the process, each time stopping just before the blister forms. The skin around the back of your heel and underneath it, and the area under your big toes, in particular, will become hard and will probably not blister again. In 'the old days', there were 2 old wive's remedies; soaking you feet in vinegar, or if vinegar was not within your budget, you could use urine, preferably your own. Both stink a bit, which probably accounts for why distance skaters often have to skate without their mates!!
