Long Distance Skating? - 23:56 12 Jul 11 Any tips on how to skate long distances without learning the full on double push thingy?

Dunno if it's just adjusting to my new hockey skates and wheel set up but doing a bit of training for goodwood and my shins were killing me!

Re:Long Distance Skating? - 07:49 13 Jul 11 Only the top skaters double push - you'll find very few skaters who can do it properly just out and about.

There are two things you need to be able to skate long distances(fast) - fitness and good technique. Good technique doesn't necessarily mean double push, but it does mean having a good single push. Things to note regarding this as a starter:
- knee bend
- pushing through the heel (NOT toe-pushing)
- recovery
- straight set down
- nose - knees - toes

Hard to say why your shins are hurting, but my first port of call would be to check your cuffs and perhaps loosen the top a bit. Depends whether this is a 'rubbing' type issue, or a muscle type issue. If it's the latter, just lots of skating should fix it.

Re:Long Distance Skating? - 15:15 13 Jul 11 It could be a few things but if your shins are hurting you probably need to bend your knees more. It certainly can't hurt as very few people (myself included) bend enough. As Eddy Matzger says, sit in the "Air Chair" A great talk from @davecarroll at #DigitalSurrey tonight. Re:Long Distance Skating? - 20:08 13 Jul 11 I'm thinking the main offender will be not bending enough!
Since i've got back into skating it's been all hockey, so short bursts instead of distance.

Better get lot's of practice this month.

Re:Long Distance Skating? - 13:47 03 Aug 11 OK does anyone have any magical solutions for blisters?
Did 18miles for Goodwood practice last week and since then I keep getting blisters.
I tried last night with all manner of straps and plasters but could only do 10K before they were raw again.

Thanks!

Re:Long Distance Skating? - 19:39 03 Aug 11 Vaseline on the rubbing areas. Not sure how useful this will be for you if you already have them though. Best thing I've found to prevent them though. ! Skate Monkey !

Re:Long Distance Skating? - 11:42 04 Aug 11 Everone has their own remedies, and it's worth giving them all a try. I've found that the secret is not to allow a blister to form in the first place. There comes a point when you become aware of the discomfort; that's the time to stop, before the blister really forms. Within a couple of days, the skin around the affected area starts to harden, then you can skate again and repeat the process, each time stopping just before the blister forms. The skin around the back of your heel and underneath it, and the area under your big toes, in particular, will become hard and will probably not blister again.
In 'the old days', there were 2 old wive's remedies; soaking you feet in vinegar, or if vinegar was not within your budget, you could use urine, preferably your own. Both stink a bit, which probably accounts for why distance skaters often have to skate without their mates!!
