When Goodwood roller marathon was announced that it wouldn’t be happening this year, I decided to organise a smaller, very different version. Whereas Goodwood is more like the British F1 grand prix, Oxted will be more like the Monaco street circuit! No run off areas, hills up and down, tight chicanes with brick walls each side!
Why is it called Skate Conquest? Sophie Conquest is an artistic skater at my club. She needs to raise £3500 in order to go to Uganda and help local people at their school and their village to gain a better life. She is a year 9 student at Oxted School. She needs to raise money, we need to skate. It’s that simple.
But: I'm a little out of practice organising marathons since passing on Goodwood to the Camberley skaters in about 2004. We don’t have the expertise that they have and we certainly don’t have the man power. But it’s a great challenging circuit so don’t miss out!
If you are a proficient skater and are in need of a challenge, this is for you.
But please note: There will be a few skaters from the school less proficient than you. Give them space and plenty of warning please.
•If you have to stop on the circuit please move off the racing line quickly. •Warn slower skaters that you are approaching. •A lap will take some of you less than 2 minutes so please inform stewards of any accidents.
What you need. You will need someone to count your laps (93 laps for a marathon). And to hand you water. Plenty of food Plenty of water (although there are drink fountains around the school circuit). Skates Plasters for blisters (although we will have first aiders present should there be injuries.
Any questions Please call Barry Bridger on 01293 776266 (evenings)
Raining? So what? We’re tough! Just take care on the corners.
